Durban’s trailblazer drops the next instalment of his influential series
Renowned producer, DJ and Gqom pioneer QUE DJ has officially returned with We Don’t Play The Same Gqom 3 (WDPTSG3) — a powerful new chapter in the series that has reshaped the sound, spirit and global perception of Gqom.
A HIGH-IMPACT GLOBAL ROLLOUT
The WDPTSG3 era ignited with the explosive lead single “Da Skoro” ft. DJ Lag, a heavyweight collaboration between two of the genre’s most important architects.
The rollout extended far beyond the studio. QUE DJ staged an immersive experiential launch in Amsterdam during ADE, followed by an electric WDPTSG3 release party on launch night — moments that further cemented Gqom’s rising presence on international stages.
FROM DURBAN’S TOWNSHIPS TO WORLDWIDE DANCE FLOORS
Born and raised in the townships of Durban, QUE DJ has been central to Gqom’s evolution — from raw, underground Fruity Loops creations to a globally recognised electronic movement.
As a founding member of Distruction Boyz, QUE DJ helped craft era-defining hits including:
- “Omunye”
- “Wololo” (featured in Marvel’s Black Panther)
These anthems propelled Gqom into global pop culture, and QUE DJ has continued to push the genre’s boundaries ever since.
A CONSTANT INNOVATOR, A CULTURAL FORCE
QUE DJ’s creative universe is constantly expanding:
- Pioneer of heavier bass movements like UMKHUNKULU
- Performances at major venues including Paradiso Amsterdam and Village Underground London
- Exploration of new sonic identities through his iGhost alter ego
- A SAMA-winning predecessor, We Don’t Play The Same Gqom 2, which spawned its own festival
His work continues to redefine what modern Gqom can sound and feel like.
BEYOND MUSIC: COMMUNITY, CULTURE & GLOBAL IMPACT
QUE DJ’s influence reaches into grassroots development and cultural storytelling:
- Amagogogo Sounds — a platform uplifting emerging electronic artists
- Emagogogweni — a growing space for immersive Gqom-led experiences
- Recently partnered with Spotify
- Delivered the first-ever international Gqom installation at ADE
These initiatives continue to push Gqom forward while nurturing the communities that birthed it.
QUE DJ ON THE NEW PROJECT
“This project is about pushing Gqom forward while staying rooted in where we come from. It’s a reminder that our sound, our culture, and our story deserve global stages. We don’t play the same because we’re constantly evolving — and this chapter is only the beginning.”
A DEFINING MOMENT FOR SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTRONIC MUSIC
With We Don’t Play The Same Gqom 3, QUE DJ once again expands the genre’s soundscape and asserts his role as one of its most progressive leaders.
The project marks not just a musical release, but a cultural milestone — one that continues to elevate Gqom onto the world stage while honouring its origins in Durban.
