Amapiano Pioneer Takes Centre Stage
Apple Music has announced South African DJ and globally renowned producer Vigro Deep as the latest Isgubhu featured artist, accompanied by the release of his exclusive Isgubhu DJ Mix. The recognition highlights his influential role in shaping Amapiano’s global rise while celebrating the trajectory of his acclaimed Baby Boy album series.
Honouring His Roots and Artistic Evolution
Known for his hard-hitting log drums, cinematic builds and fearless experimentation, Vigro Deep has become one of the defining voices in African electronic music. His Baby Boy series—culminating in the recent Baby Boy V—has solidified his impact on the genre.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the mix, Vigro Deep told Apple Music that it pays homage to both established and emerging artists who’ve shaped his journey.
“My mix was a tribute to the artists who have played a role in my journey as well as new artists who I find inspiring for pushing their own sounds,”
he said.
“It is also a celebration for the end of the Baby Boy chapter… this mix captures all of that for me.”

From Atteridgeville to the World
Born and raised in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, Vigro Deep (real name Kamogelo Phetla) was immersed in music from an early age, inspired by his father DJ Spring of The Godfathers of Deep House SA. After initially dreaming of becoming a rapper, he shifted to producing and released his debut Baby Boy album at just 17.
His catalogue now includes standout hits such as “Black Power” and “Untold Stories,” alongside platinum-certified singles “Blue Monday” and “A-Z Yash Imoto.” His production skills have also featured prominently in major collaborations, including contributions to the Scorpion Kings album.
Reflecting on his mix, Vigro Deep said the mood centres on “the feeling of being home, where I am my happiest.”
Global Influence and a Sonic Vision
Internationally, Vigro Deep has championed Amapiano across stages in the UK, United States, Botswana and Mozambique. His distinctive style—driven by pounding drums, electrifying synths and bold rhythmic structures—continues to expand the genre’s global reach.
Commenting on the evolution of African electronic music, he emphasised creativity and authenticity.
“African electronic music continues to evolve because artists push boundaries and put time into finding their own unique sound… it’s always been about blending genres which has allowed me to keep my releases fresh.”
