Producer shares how a spontaneous studio session led to one of the album’s standout collaborations
Speaking at the launch of Frigid Armadillo’s new album, The Light, acclaimed producer and DJ Sun-El Musician gave fans a glimpse into the creative process behind his collaboration with the duo on the track Sunshine (Ilanga Lami).
Addressing guests at the event, Sun-El Musician praised Frigid Armadillo’s musicality, particularly highlighting Siya, whom he described as one of the most talented musicians he has worked with.
“I honestly believe in these guys. I think they’re amazing. Siya is a songwriter, he’s a guitarist – he’s one of the most brilliant guys,” he said, encouraging the audience to show their appreciation with applause.
A friendship that extends beyond the studio
Sun-El Musician explained that the collaboration was built on a genuine friendship, revealing that he and Siya are neighbours who regularly exchange ideas and create music together.
“He lives about five minutes away from my house, so we always just talk to each other and we make a lot of records,” he said.
According to the producer, their close relationship has made collaborating a natural process rather than something that needs to be planned extensively.
How ‘Sunshine’ was born
Recalling the origins of Sunshine, Sun-El Musician said the song emerged from an unplanned recording session after both artists had been feeling creatively drained.
“I just went to my default space and got back on the record,” he explained. “It was like, ‘Oh, this is great.’ I said, ‘Okay, great. Save it and take it home.'”
That spontaneous moment, he said, ultimately became the foundation for Sunshine, one of the collaborations featured on The Light.
A partnership built on chemistry
Sun-El Musician added that there was already a strong connection between himself and Frigid Armadillo before working on the record, making the creative process seamless.
“We already had a connection with them, and then they connected as well. So, you know, it’s just like that,” he said.
The collaboration highlights the chemistry between the artists and reinforces the collaborative spirit that runs throughout The Light, an album that brings together some of South Africa’s leading Afro-house and soulful music talents.
