South African producer and artist Sobzeen is turning the pages of his personal journey into music with the release of Nguni Tales, a deeply reflective album exploring faith, love, heartbreak, resilience and African identity.
Moving between Amapiano, Afro-House and 3-Step, the project draws directly from Sobzeen’s own experiences while presenting stories and emotions designed to resonate far beyond his own life.
“This album is my diary. It is the sound of my journey—the highs, the lows, and the lessons learned along the way,” says Sobzeen. “When I named this project Nguni Tales, I wanted to create a home for every African soul. No matter what language you speak or where you come from, if you are African, this is your story too.”
‘Proof’ Sets a Spiritual Foundation
The journey begins with album opener “Proof”, a statement of faith that establishes the spiritual foundation of Nguni Tales.
For Sobzeen, the song is an acknowledgement of the higher power he believes has guided him through both the victories and difficult chapters of his journey.
From that starting point, the album becomes increasingly personal. Sobzeen reflects on relationships, moments when his kindness has been taken for granted and the emotional consequences of continuing to give even after experiencing disappointment.
Rather than allowing those experiences to harden him, however, Nguni Tales finds the artist holding onto his belief in love.
“These songs are my confession and my release,” he explains. “But here is the truth I want you to take away: I still believe in love. I know your heart might be tired. I know you’ve been hurt. But I need you to work hard, keep your eyes on the horizon, and never stop believing that love is worth the risk.”
‘Amasango’ Opened the Door to ‘Nguni Tales’
Listeners were first introduced to the world of Nguni Tales through “Amasango”, Sobzeen’s collaboration with Born Kxng, featuring Ssips.
Centred around the idea of opening new doors and embracing what lies ahead, the track captures Sobzeen at a point of transition — choosing growth, self-belief and possibility despite what may have happened in the past.
Musically, “Amasango” also provided an early indication of the album’s sonic direction, bringing together elements of Amapiano, Afro-House and 3-Step.
That genre-fluid approach continues throughout Nguni Tales, allowing Sobzeen to build an album that feels rooted in contemporary South African dance music while remaining driven by storytelling.
‘Jikelele’ Turns Personal Experiences Into Shared Emotion
On focus track “Jikelele”, Sobzeen reunites with Ssips for a vibrant record that captures one of the album’s central ideas: while people may come from different cultures, communities and languages, many of the emotions shaping their lives remain universal.
Built around infectious rhythms and an emotive spirit, “Jikelele” explores experiences of love, loss, hope and perseverance.
It is here that the concept behind Nguni Tales becomes particularly clear. Sobzeen may be telling his own story, but the emotions within it create space for listeners to recognise parts of themselves.
His heartbreak can mirror somebody else’s. His faith becomes a reminder to persevere. His decision to remain open to love, despite disappointment, becomes an expression of courage.
Sobzeen Finds Strength in a Broken Heart
Throughout Nguni Tales, Sobzeen allows the personal and communal to exist alongside one another.
Instead of presenting heartbreak simply as an ending, the album looks at what can emerge from difficult experiences — greater self-awareness, faith, resilience and the willingness to keep moving forward.
“If this album does one thing,” Sobzeen says, “I hope it reminds you that your broken heart is still capable of greatness.”
That message ultimately sits at the heart of Nguni Tales.
