Uncool MC steps into his own with ‘Setla’ ahead of debut solo EP

After years of bringing his unmistakable energy to some of Amapiano’s notable records and stages, Uncool MC is stepping further into his own artistry with the release of his new single, “Setla.”

Released on Friday, 4 September 2026 through gamma., the dance-driven record marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Johannesburg-born entertainer as he prepares to release his upcoming solo EP on 25 September 2026.

“Setla” brings together an Amapiano powerhouse line-up

Meaning “move your body” or “dance,” “Setla” lives up to its name with an energetic approach built for the dancefloor.

The track sees Uncool MC joining forces with DJ Maphorisa, Focalistic, Ntsako XVI and Shaun 101, bringing together a formidable Amapiano line-up while placing Uncool MC’s personality and performance energy at the centre of the record.

For an artist who has spent years contributing to other musicians’ releases, “Setla” represents an opportunity to begin defining what his own body of work will sound and feel like.

From collaborator to solo artist

Born Thando Sibeko, Uncool MC has steadily built his reputation as an MC, entertainer and recording artist from the east of Johannesburg.

His journey initially began behind the decks as a DJ before he transitioned into MCing, eventually expanding his creative ambitions into songwriting and recording.

Over the years, he has appeared on records including “Bula Nthweo” alongside DJ Maphorisa, Vetkoek and Mahoota, “Sela” by Cyfred and DBN GOGO, and “oTsotsi” by Kwenyama Brothers.

Those collaborations have helped establish his voice within Amapiano, but his latest chapter places greater focus on Uncool MC as an artist in his own right.

Major stages helped shape Uncool MC’s journey

Beyond the studio, Uncool MC has built much of his reputation through his energetic live performances and ability to connect with crowds.

His journey has taken him to major events including Cotton Fest, Piano People, Afro Nation and Fact Durban Rocks, giving him experience on stages both in South Africa and internationally.

He is now channelling those years of live performance and collaboration into music carrying his own artistic identity.

‘It’s a celebration of life, growth and the journey’

While “Setla” is designed to make people move, Uncool MC says there is also a personal story behind the celebration.

“‘Setla’ carries a deeply personal meaning for me. It’s a celebration of life, growth and the journey that has brought me to this point in my career. The song is an invitation to let loose and enjoy the moment, while also celebrating how far I’ve come.”

The record also taps into themes of ambition, success and enjoying the rewards that come with growth.

“The references to CÉ LA VI in Sandton speak to the themes of luxury and opulence within the song,” says Uncool MC.

That aspirational energy positions “Setla” as more than simply another dancefloor release. It becomes a snapshot of an artist celebrating where he is while looking towards where he wants to go next.

New EP arrives on 25 September

“Setla” serves as the first introduction to Uncool MC’s forthcoming solo EP, which arrives on 25 September 2026.

The project is expected to further reveal his identity away from the supporting roles and collaborations through which many listeners may have first discovered him.

With more than 1.4 million monthly Spotify listeners and a catalogue that has accumulated more than 140 million Spotify streams across his releases and collaborations, Uncool MC already enters this solo chapter with a sizeable audience.
