TheJournalistDJ.com welcomes music producer, sound designer, and attorney Hypnosis for his debut feature on the platform. Known for his multifaceted career, Hypnosis shares his journey, major collaborations, and his latest project.
Who Is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis hails from Pretoria and is now based in Johannesburg. With over 23 years in the music industry, he wears many hats — producer, DJ, performer, sound designer, and qualified attorney specializing in music, television, and film law.
Falling in Love with Music
His passion for music began in 1994 after hearing Snyaka’s The Law. By 1997, he was already experimenting with the piano, and the journey never stopped. Influences like DJ Cleo further inspired his commitment to the craft.
Career Highlights and Collaborations
Over the years, Hypnosis has contributed to major projects including:
- The first Canyon Bells album
- Almost all of DJ Fistaz’s album
- A song with R. Kelly
- Lady Zamar’s Love Is Blind with Divine Brothers
- Work for Dr Malinga, DJ Choice, Donald, Alton Miller, and more
He’s also worked extensively with Soul Candi and boasts a career connected to over 20 industry awards.
From Music to Law
Hypnosis pursued law after experiencing music rights theft early in his career. Determined to fight for himself and others, he studied law, returned to the industry, and won his case — a move that shaped his dual career path.
The New Project with KB and Thebe
The centerpiece of his latest work is an original track with KB and Thebe, featuring:
- Soa Matrixx remix
- Oscar Mbo remix
- Tekniq remix
- Cuebur remix
Originally planned for next year, the release was pushed forward on Oscar Mbo’s advice. The project will be promoted alongside Thebe’s tour, with Hypnosis performing at each stop.
Longstanding Ties with Thebe and KB
Hypnosis has admired KB’s lyrical style for years and worked closely with Thebe both musically and legally. The collaboration came naturally, with Thebe even suggesting KB for their second track together.
Setting the Record Straight on Sister Bettina
Addressing long-standing debates, Hypnosis reaffirms that he created the original production and rendition of the iconic track Sister Bettina. While Mgarimbe’s lyrics helped make it a hit, he maintains the beat was his work — a fact soon to be explored in an upcoming documentary.
What’s Next?
With the remix pack and tour underway, Hypnosis is set on pushing his EP to new heights. His journey blends creative artistry with legal advocacy, ensuring both the sound and the business of music remain in capable hands.
