Backstage at the 2025 South African Music Awards (SAMAs), rising Amapiano artist Ranger took a moment to reflect on a career-defining milestone as he was honoured for being part of the Most Streamed Song of the Year.
Speaking to thejournalistdj.com, the Diepsloot-born creative held a bouquet of flowers — a symbolic gesture recognising the massive success of “Kwelanga 2.0” by Bassie, a chart-dominating anthem that reshaped the Amapiano soundscape in 2025.
“They’re Giving Me My Flowers” — A Moment of Gratitude
Ranger expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, describing the award as something that once felt like a distant dream.
“I feel honoured to be given such an amazing award. It used to be a dream, and now it’s happening,” he shared.
Beyond accolades, Ranger emphasised that his journey is about purpose — healing souls, spreading joy, and delivering meaningful music, with or without awards.
From Diepsloot to Zeerust: Ranger’s Roots
Originally from Diepsloot, with family roots in Zeerust, North West, Ranger’s story is grounded in community and perseverance. He began his music journey in 2016, initially as a hip-hop artist before a major sonic shift changed everything.
Falling in Love With Amapiano
In 2021, Ranger discovered Amapiano — inspired by genre pioneers such as Kabza De Small and Kelvin Momo.
That inspiration soon turned into alignment, leading to collaborations with Kelvin Momo himself and mentorship under Major League DJz, whom Ranger credits for shaping not just his sound, but his discipline and leadership.
“From here, it’s us next. We have to stop being kids and start evolving into better inspirations.”
The Making of “Kwelanga 2.0”
Ranger also unpacked how the hit collaboration came together, giving credit to Thulani Way, who brought the team together for the studio session.
With Bassie, M Touch, Amaza, Tman Xpress, LeeMcKrazy, Zimmy, and Ranger all contributing their unique energy, the result was “Kwelanga 2.0” — a cultural moment that went on to become the Most Streamed Song of the Year at the SAMAs.
Shout Outs, Legacy and What’s Next
Closing off the conversation, Ranger delivered heartfelt shout-outs to his family, his late father, his granny, mentors, teachers, collaborators, and the global supporters pushing his music forward.
More music is on the way, and if this SAMA-winning moment is anything to go by, Ranger’s journey is only just beginning.
