Producer confirms new project is in the works as he embraces a new chapter

Award-winning South African producer and DJ Yumbs has revealed that he is deep in the creative process of a brand-new project, while also confirming a major career move after signing with Sony Music.

Speaking to TheJournalistDJ.com on the sidelines of the launch of Kabza De Small’s Tech Hub record label, Yumbs said fans can expect new music, although they may have to be patient a little longer.

“I’m actually working on a project right now. I won’t say it’s dropping soon because I’m still in the process, but I’m excited. I can’t wait to drop music,” he said.

Celebrating Junior SA’s milestone

Yumbs was attending the official unveiling of Tech Hub, the new imprint founded by Kabza De Small, which also introduced its first artist, JNR SA.

Describing the occasion as a significant moment for South African music, Yumbs praised both the atmosphere and the vision behind the label.

“Today is Kabza De Small’s label launch, Tech Hub, and its first artist signing is Junior SA. I think it’s a great night. The music is amazing and it’s a great vibe. I’m glad to be here and excited to learn,” he said.

Duo project with Zwayetoven remains a possibility

While remaining tight-lipped about every detail surrounding his upcoming release, Yumbs hinted that fans could see another collaborative project with producer Zwayetoven, with whom he has previously worked.

He also revealed an impressive list of collaborators currently involved in his new recordings, including Simmy, Ami Faku, and his newly signed artist Kaylee Broman.

“I might come with another duo project with Zwayetoven, that’s something we’re talking about. In the studio right now there are a whole lot of nice features… Simmy, Ami Faku, and Kaylee Broman. Shout out to my artist,” he said.

New label, same mission

One of the biggest revelations from the interview was Yumbs’ confirmation that he has officially left Warner Music and signed with Sony Music.

The producer explained that the move was simply the result of his previous contract reaching its conclusion and stressed that there was no bad blood between the two parties.

“I also just signed to Sony. I’m excited. My contract with Warner finished. Warner is family,” he said.

“Music is music”

As conversations continue around amapiano’s evolution and the growing influence of Afro Tech, Yumbs made it clear that he refuses to be boxed into a single genre.

Although he is widely recognised as one of amapiano’s leading producers, he believes his role extends far beyond one style of music.

“For me, music has always been music. It’s not about amapiano, Afro Tech, Afrobeats or hip hop. I’m a music producer, I don’t produce a genre. I produce music,” he said.

He added that while his next project will remain rooted in amapiano, he remains open to exploring other sounds in the future.

“We’re still on amapiano level, but music is music,” he added.

Yumbs to revive Yumborghini Club and Young & Happening Festival

Away from the studio, Yumbs is also preparing to revive two of his fan-favourite experiences.

The producer confirmed that Yumborghini Club will soon return, bringing together some of South Africa’s top DJs for back-to-back performances focused purely on celebrating music.

He also announced the return of his Young & Happening Festival, following the success of its previous edition.

“I’m coming back with Yumborghini Club Sundays. I invite some of the best DJs in South Africa to play back-to-back with me. It’s all about the music, the vibes and the people. We’re also bringing back Young & Happening Festival soon,” he revealed.

Looking to mentor the next generation

Having recently signed his first artist, Yumbs said he is open to expanding his roster in the future, but only for artists who genuinely respect their craft.

For him, talent is only part of the equation.

“Just be dope. Be yourself. It’s about the talent, but also have a pure heart and respect the music. Whatever you do, don’t ever disrespect the music,” he advised aspiring artists hoping to work with him.

A producer entering a new era

Already regarded as one of the architects of modern amapiano, Yumbs’ latest announcements signal another important chapter in his career. With a new label partnership, an anticipated project in development, live music experiences making a return and ambitions to mentor emerging talent, the producer appears poised to further expand his influence on South Africa’s evolving music landscape.
