RubyGold Reclaims Her Identity as She Ushers in a New Era

by admin

South African singer-songwriter RubyGold says she has finally found her voice, identity and artistic direction after years of navigating the complexities of the music industry.

From House Music Breakthrough to Self-Discovery

Known for hit collaborations such as Invitation to Dance and Teka Munike, RubyGold reflected on her journey into the music industry, revealing that while her breakthrough during the 2010 FIFA World Cup era was a dream come true, she was not emotionally or professionally prepared for the sudden spotlight.

The vocalist explained that despite years of working towards success, she was still discovering her artistic identity and struggled with questions about genre, branding and navigating the politics of the music business.

‘Mixed Masala’: Celebrating a Multicultural Heritage

RubyGold opened up about her unique heritage, describing herself as a South African with Portuguese-Mozambican roots on her mother’s side and Griqua ancestry through her father.

She said her latest EP, Mixed Masala, was intentionally named to celebrate every part of her identity and to challenge assumptions people often make about her background.

Rather than choosing one culture over another, the singer says she proudly embraces both influences as part of who she is.

Healing Behind the Scenes

Away from the stage, RubyGold revealed that much of her recent journey has involved confronting personal trauma and working through an identity crisis.

She explained that taking time away from the spotlight allowed her to better understand herself, saying the process has strengthened both her personal life and creative direction.

More Than Dance Music

Although she became widely associated with house music, RubyGold says she never wanted to be confined to a single genre.

Describing herself as a versatile artist capable of moving between R&B, jazz, house and other styles, she believes her voice—not the beat—is what defines her music.

She also clarified that songs like Invitation to Dance and Teka Munike were always intended to empower women through storytelling, despite misconceptions created by their visuals and commercial success.

A New Project Focused on Dance and Storytelling

Looking ahead, RubyGold revealed she is working on a new musical project that combines infectious dance rhythms with meaningful storytelling.

She said her goal is to get audiences dancing again while continuing to write songs with emotional depth and messages that resonate beyond the dance floor.

“I’ve found my identity,” she said, adding that she wants listeners to recognise her unique sound regardless of the genre.

A Heartfelt Message to Fans

Closing the interview, RubyGold thanked her supporters, saying she values them not just as fans but as fellow human beings.

She said she hopes people connect with her authenticity and understand that behind the performer is someone who leads with love and humanity.
