A deeply personal tribute to his late father
South African producer and artist Echo Deep has channelled one of life’s most painful experiences into music with his new album, Vusani, a soulful Amapiano project created in remembrance of his late father.
Rather than approaching the album as simply another release, Echo Deep built Vusani around memories, grief and the desire to keep the spirit of someone important to him alive. The loss of his father became the emotional foundation of a project through which he could communicate feelings that are sometimes difficult to express in words.
“I decided to put this album together as a sign of remembrance for my late father. Losing a parent is something that changes you, and I wanted to create something that would keep his memory alive. This album comes from a very personal place in my heart,” says Echo Deep.
‘Vusani’ is about keeping a memory alive
The album’s title carries particular significance. Vusani reflects the idea of bringing something back to life — fitting for a body of work centred on ensuring that memories continue to live through music.
Musically, Echo Deep leans into the soulful side of Amapiano, combining warm melodies, emotional vocals, deep basslines and rhythmic grooves. While firmly rooted in the South African genre, the producer brings his own perspective to the sound through elements of soul and Afro-inspired production.
The result is an album that attempts to hold grief and celebration in the same space.
Music you can dance to — and feel
Despite emerging from loss, Vusani is not intended to be an album consumed entirely through sadness.
Instead, Echo Deep uses the project to celebrate life and the memories that remain after someone is gone. Across the album, reflective passages meet dancefloor-ready grooves, allowing listeners to move between different emotions.
“I wanted the music to feel good, but I also wanted it to have meaning. Soulful Amapiano gives me the space to do both,” he explains. “You can dance to it, but you can also sit down and listen to the lyrics, the melodies and the feeling behind the music.”
Cnethemba Gonelo and more join the project
Echo Deep also opens up Vusani to a collection of collaborators, each bringing a different musical identity to the project.
Cnethemba Gonelo, Khanya De Vocalist, Cuba Beats, Sambo Sq, Scrooge KmoA and Kevin Chant are among the artists featured on the album, adding to its collaborative character while supporting Echo Deep’s broader musical vision.

The project has also received support from SAMRO, which Echo Deep describes as meaningful encouragement for his work as a South African creator.
“Having the support of SAMRO means a lot to me. It gives me encouragement as a creator and shows the importance of supporting South African musicians and the work that goes into creating music,” he says.
With Vusani, Echo Deep ultimately turns a private experience of losing his father into something communal — an album about grief, remembrance and the possibility of finding joy again.
