South African multi-hyphenate Clement Maosa steps boldly into a new musical chapter with the release of his latest EP, Lekompo Ke Nomoro Vol. 2 | Back to the Roots, a deeply intentional body of work that reconnects the genre to its foundation while pushing its sonic boundaries forward.
From Screen Star to Sonic Storyteller
Widely known for his role as Zamokuhle Seakamela on the hit Skeem Saam, Maosa continues to expand his creative footprint, seamlessly bridging the worlds of television and music. With this latest offering, he leans fully into his musical identity, reaffirming his place within the growing Lekompo movement.
A Cultural Statement Rooted in Unity
Rooted in heritage and driven by purpose, Back to the Roots stands as more than just an EP — it is a cultural statement. Built on the ethos of collaboration, the project brings together a powerful collective of Lekompo voices, reinforcing the genre’s communal spirit and shared identity.
“This project demonstrates the power of collaboration amongst Lekompo artists… for the culture and unity,”
Maosa explains, a sentiment that echoes throughout the project’s layered and textured soundscape.

Revisiting the DNA of Lekompo
At its core, the EP is a musical homecoming. Drawing from the original textures and rhythms that shaped Lekompo, Maosa revisits the genre’s early sonic DNA, raw, percussive, and deeply rooted in tradition while reimagining it through a modern lens.
The result is a sound that feels both nostalgic and forward-facing, bridging generations of listeners while honoring the pioneers who laid the groundwork.
“Ke Bakgotse (Mpepu)” Leads the Narrative
The focus track, Ke Bakgotse (Mpepu), stands as a defining moment on the project — a resonant offering that captures the spirit of ancestral connection, storytelling, and rhythm-driven expression that has long defined Lekompo’s essence.
A Collective of Voices and Visionaries
Across the EP, Maosa curates a dynamic lineup of collaborators including Wendy Moon, Zoli White Smoke, Novex, Ice Cue, Bayor97, Slidoo Man, PLG Chanty, Vsinare, Poobington, and more — each contributing their unique voice to a collective narrative centered on identity, culture, and evolution.
Behind the scenes, a robust production ensemble featuring Ice Cue, Bayor97, Slidoo Man, Novex, Primo ZA, REAL K MFANAKOTA, BL Zero, Omega, MooDee, Vida-Soul, and SmeezyOn The Beat crafts a rich and immersive sonic palette.
Expanding the Sound for a Global Stage
Intentional in its construction, Back to the Roots expands beyond traditional Lekompo frameworks by incorporating live instrumentation — from guitar riffs to saxophone melodies and layered percussion — to create a globally resonant sound.
It’s a deliberate step toward positioning Lekompo on the world stage, acknowledging that while music evolves, its soul must remain intact.
Reframing the Future of Lekompo
With Lekompo Ke Nomoro Vol. 2 | Back to the Roots, Clement Maosa not only revisits the past but reframes it — preserving its authenticity while carving out new pathways for the future of the genre.
