MFR Soul’s Maero explains solo project The Musical Experience

MFR Souls Co-Founder Steps Into the Spotlight With a Personal Solo Project

One of Amapiano’s pioneering architects, Maero, officially introduced fans and industry stakeholders to a new side of his artistry during an intimate listening session for his forthcoming album, The Musical Experience, held at La Parada Newmarket.

Known globally as one half of the legendary duo MFR Souls, Maero used the exclusive event to showcase a body of work that moves beyond the signature MFR Souls sound, giving listeners a glimpse into his personal musical identity.

During an exclusive interview with TheJournalistDJ.Com, the producer reflected on his journey, the global rise of Amapiano, and why now was the right time to release a solo album.

“I Feel Like A Proud Father of Amapiano”

Few producers have witnessed Amapiano’s growth quite like Maero.

Reflecting on the genre’s humble beginnings, he spoke candidly about the years of struggle before the sound became one of South Africa’s biggest cultural exports.

“We worked very hard for this to get here because people used to close doors on us. We never used to get the chances. But with all the fights and everything, Amapiano is now all over the world and nobody can stop it. I feel like a proud father that gave birth to Amapiano.”

The statement captures the pride of a producer who has spent years helping shape a genre that now dominates dance floors across Africa, Europe and beyond.

A Strategic Release That Paid Off

The interview also shed light on the success of Maero’s recent solo single, which quickly became a fan favourite and achieved Platinum status.

Interestingly, the producer revealed that delaying the song’s release until February was a calculated decision.

Rather than releasing it during the crowded December festive season, he believed giving the record its own space would allow it to enjoy a longer life.

“If I dropped it in December, the December wave would’ve taken it away. I wanted the song to push for a bit longer, so I released it the following year—and it worked.”

The strategy proved successful as the song gained traction on TikTok before translating into commercial success.

Celebrating Success Without Losing Humility

Fans recently noticed photos of Maero posing with two luxury vehicles alongside Platinum plaques on social media.

While he rarely shares personal milestones publicly, he explained that the moment simply represented a personal celebration after years of hard work.

“I don’t like posting a lot about my personal stuff. I don’t like bragging. But it was a proud moment, so I took out my two cars, my two plaques and took a picture. After all, I was celebrating.”

MFR Souls Isn’t Going Anywhere

Following the release of his solo material, many fans questioned whether MFR Souls had come to an end.

Maero quickly dismissed the speculation.

According to the producer, the duo remains intact and new MFR Souls music is still on the way.

For now, however, his focus is on building his own brand and exploring music that sits outside the MFR Souls catalogue.

“We’re good. We’re still going to drop music. But for now, I just want to focus more on my brand. Nothing personal.”

An Album That Reflects The Real Maero

Unlike the familiar Amapiano sound fans have come to expect from MFR Souls, The Musical Experience is intended to showcase Maero’s wider musical influences.

He also credited his producer for helping assemble many of the collaborations featured on the album.

A Different Listening Experience

Maero made it clear that listeners should approach the album with fresh expectations.

Rather than searching for another MFR Souls project, he wants audiences to discover the artist behind the iconic duo.

“People shouldn’t expect MFR Souls. Expect more of Maero than MFR. This is just me.”
