Afro Tech DJ embraces all genres of music
South African Afro Tech DJ and producer Lotus Mae, born Ntsamaeng Moseamedi, says her passion for music extends far beyond a single genre, revealing that she actively supports artists across the music spectrum.
Speaking during an interview with AndileUnfiltered at a hip-hop listening session, Lotus Mae explained that although she has built her career within the Afro Tech space, she enjoys experiencing different sounds and celebrating fellow South African musicians.
“Just because I listen to Afro Tech and I’m an Afro Tech DJ and producer doesn’t mean that I can’t indulge myself in different genres. I decided to come out and support fellow South African artists and see what’s happening on the ground,” she said.
She also praised the featured artist for continuously evolving creatively and maintaining a strong presence within the local music industry.
Building a community through music
Describing herself as “a girl that loves music,” Lotus Mae said her work goes beyond DJing and producing.
The Johannesburg-based creative has also established herself as an event curator, hosting experiences designed to bring together lovers of Afro Tech culture.
“Lotus Mae is a born-and-bred Afro Tech DJ and producer, and I also do Afro Tech events. We do it for the culture,” she said.
New AfroGqom concept launches in 2026
One of the biggest announcements from the interview was the launch of AfroGqom, a brand-new event concept that fuses the sounds of Afro Tech and Gqom.
According to Lotus Mae, the initiative is aimed at creating a fresh dancefloor experience while expanding the sounds that audiences can enjoy.
The new series will debut at Great Dane in Melville, joining her already established Sip & Dance events, which continue to attract Afro Tech enthusiasts.
She revealed that six events are currently planned, consisting of both Sip & Dance and AfroGqom editions, including a women-focused Sip & Dance event scheduled for next month.
“We’re keeping it very light, we’re keeping it very sexy because it’s also our flagship,” she said while describing the AfroGqom experience.
Still searching for her signature sound
Although fans are eager for new music, Lotus Mae admitted she is taking her time before releasing new material.
The producer explained that she is still refining her artistic identity, saying every studio session leads her in unexpected creative directions.
“I believe production has to come from your soul,” she said. “Every time I step into the studio, what comes out is never Afro Tech or Deep House—it’s usually something else. I still need to consolidate what that sound is before I give it to the people.”
Collaborations already in the pipeline
While no release dates have been confirmed, Lotus Mae revealed that she has several tracks in development.
Among them are collaborations with producers Kusini and Tenza, both of which she hinted could become her next official releases once she feels ready to share her evolving sound.
For now, the DJ says fans will have to be patient as she focuses on authenticity rather than rushing new music to market.
