South African Amapiano star Nkosazana Daughter is using her latest single, “Kasi Lam,” to give fans a glimpse into the world that shaped her, from the township experiences of her childhood to the dreams she can now afford to celebrate.
TheJournalistDJ.com recently caught up with the singer at the intimate “Kasi Lam” single launch in Illovo, Johannesburg, where she opened up about the meaning behind the record, performing for more than 20,000 people in Kenya, her growth in the music industry and some potentially big plans still to come.
‘I just want to show people how I grew up’
“Kasi Lam” sees Nkosazana Daughter collaborate with Focalistic, Da Muziqal Chef and Mlooda, with the singer revealing that working with some of the artists on the record had been a long-held ambition.
For Nkosazana Daughter, however, the song goes beyond assembling a strong Amapiano line-up. It is personal.
“With the song, basically, I just wanna show people how I grew up,” she told TheJournalistDJ.com. “Show them the vibe, you know, give good music. My duty to this world is to give good music.”
The launch itself reflected that vision, adopting a white T-shirt and blue denim theme while incorporating elements reminiscent of township life, including a spaza-shop setup and familiar snacks from her childhood.
“This is my childhood dream. I couldn’t afford these things when I was a kid,” she explained.
‘I’m trying to represent my kasi’
Rather than presenting township culture simply as an aesthetic, Nkosazana Daughter says “Kasi Lam” is rooted in memories of where she grew up.
She explained that many of the things recreated for the launch remain everyday realities in South African townships.
“This is literally what you’ll get in the hood,” she said. “Now I’m trying to represent my kasi by showing some of the things that I used to enjoy as a kid.”
Even the snacks at the recreated spaza shop sparked memories, with the singer recalling some of the names she knew them by growing up and revealing that some remain favourites she would still carry in her bag today.
It turned the launch into more than a listening event: it became a recreation of the environment and small pleasures that helped shape Nkosazana Daughter before the international stages and hit records.
From the kasi to more than 20,000 fans in Kenya
The singer had initially been unable to celebrate the single immediately after its release because she was travelling, having recently performed in Kenya.
Her experience there provided another indication of how far her music is travelling beyond South Africa.
“Man, it was amazing,” she said of the performance. “The response was amazing. I’m not gonna lie. Plus 20,000 people, beautiful.”
She also stressed that audiences abroad have embraced the range of music she performs rather than limiting her to one particular sound.
Nkosazana Daughter hints at something bigger
Seeing African acts command huge audiences outside their home markets appears to have given Nkosazana Daughter even bigger ideas.
Asked whether witnessing major events of that scale had inspired her to potentially stage something of her own, she confirmed that plans are already taking shape, but stopped short of revealing exactly what they are.
“I’m definitely planning something, but the announcements are coming soon, so stay tuned on my page,” she teased.
When pressed for more details, she kept the secret intact: “It’s a surprise.”
That leaves fans with an intriguing question about what the next stage of Nkosazana Daughter’s career could look like.
‘The love is the most important part’
Despite her growing success, international performances and material achievements, Nkosazana Daughter says there is one marker of success she values above everything else.
“I’ve achieved a lot,” she said. “The love is the most important part.”
She acknowledged being able to enjoy some of the material rewards that come with success, including property, but described those achievements as a form of appreciation for herself.
It is a striking contrast to the childhood story behind “Kasi Lam”: the young girl who could not always afford the things she wanted is now able to enjoy the rewards of a career that has taken her far beyond the neighbourhoods that raised her.
Finding herself in the spotlight
Nkosazana Daughter also reflected on her personal evolution since entering the music industry at a young age.
Her appearance has frequently become a talking point on social media, but she describes her changing style less as a transformation for public approval and more as part of growing into herself.
“When I came into this industry, I was young,” she explained. “You learn as you go. You find yourself. You lose yourself.”
“I guess I’m doing this journey of just finding what I love and what makes me happy.”
More music is coming
While “Kasi Lam” is currently at the centre of her rollout, Nkosazana Daughter made it clear that she isn’t slowing down.
