Apple Music has today announced Kenyan Afro-House DJ and producer Saint Evo (born Stephen Wambuga) as the cover star for the Isgubhu playlist this September.

Saint Evo, renowned for his unique Afro-House sub-genre “Afrobango,” is being celebrated for his role in shaping the vibrant and diverse electronic music landscape of East Africa.

In an exclusive interview with Apple Music, Saint Evo expressed his pride in being featured on Isgubhu, stating,

“The African electronic and dance music scene is a vibrant tapestry of innovation and cultural fusion, a testament to our continent’s mastery in blending ancestral rhythms with modern beats. I’m honoured to be on Isgubhu’s September cover, given the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the dynamic sounds of East Africa, particularly through my Afro House sub-genre, ‘Afrobango.’”

Born in Kajiado County, Kenya, Saint Evo has made a name for himself as a pioneer in the Afro-House genre, blending traditional African rhythms with contemporary electronic music.

His signature sound, Afrobango, fuses Afro House’s rhythmic elements with Bango music from Kenya’s coastal region, creating a distinct and innovative musical experience.

Drawing inspiration from the Maasai community’s vibrant rhythms and his South Asian heritage, Saint Evo has built a discography rich in cultural depth and sonic innovation.

Saint Evo’s influence was further solidified when he was named among the top 101 producers in 1001TrackLists’ Future Of Dance 2023 list.

Tracks such as “Osha’na” (2024), “Wahyu” (2024), “Tuhan” (2021), “Abantu Betshe” (2020), and “Mntwana” (2019) have received widespread acclaim for their inventive fusion and cultural significance. His latest single, “This Feeling,” available exclusively on Apple Music, exemplifies the Afrobango genre and invites listeners to the dancefloor with its infectious energy.

In celebration of his feature, Saint Evo has curated an exclusive Isgubhu playlist, showcasing a selection of pioneering African artists who are pushing the boundaries of global dance music.

“This selection blends my Afrobango sound with musical works from African artists who are currently pushing boundaries and redefining global dance music, offering a fresh and invigorating perspective on what African music can be,”

he says.
