Celebrating the Originator of 3 Step
Spotify has released RADAR Presents Thakzin, a documentary-style film spotlighting South African producer and DJ Thabang Mathebula, better known as Thakzin. He is widely celebrated as the pioneer of 3 Step — a sound that fuses Afro House and Amapiano, anchored by its signature three-kick-drum rhythm.
From RADAR Africa to Global Recognition
This marks another milestone in Thakzin’s career, following his selection as Spotify’s RADAR Africa artist in June. The programme places him among a global roster of rising stars breaking into the international scene through Spotify’s artist development platform.
Inspiration Rooted in Ivory Park
Born in the early 90s in Johannesburg’s Ivory Park, Thakzin transformed his surroundings into inspiration. From the passing sounds of township taxis to the drumbeats of a neighbour who was a sangoma (traditional healer), these everyday elements shaped the birth of 3 Step. For Thakzin, music carries more than rhythm — “music is not just sound, it’s spiritual.”
An Intimate Portrait of the Artist
The film not only captures Thakzin’s rise as the architect of 3 Step but also gives viewers a rare look into his upbringing and creative process. Featuring candid reflections from his sister and road manager Nhlanhla “Smith” Mathebula, his manager Smanga Memela, creative director Phil Darimont, and his father December Mathebula, the documentary paints a deeply personal picture of his journey.
