Following a standout national television appearance on Expresso Morning Show and early co-signs from major DSP editorial playlists, Johannesburg-based vocalist and songwriter Garth Brown has officially unveiled his debut five-track Afro-house EP, Let There Be Light.
A Full-Circle Moment Years in the Making
After more than a decade working behind the scenes in the music industry, Brown now steps forward as a fully-fledged recording artist. His journey traces back to 2012, when his voice first reached dance floors through the influential house record “Inhliziyo Yam.” Widely recognized as part of the early wave that helped shape the 3-Step movement, the track remains a staple in DJ sets today, underscoring its lasting cultural impact.
From Industry Power Player to Artist
In the years that followed, Brown built a formidable reputation as a music executive, working across A&R and marketing. His contributions have supported the growth and global positioning of artists such as CKay, Big Zulu and Sjava (collectively known as Inkabi Zezwe), as well as Zahara and Mango Groove.
His influence also extended internationally, contributing to campaigns for global superstars including Bruno Mars, Cardi B, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay.
Beyond the studio, Brown has served as a judge for the BET Awards and as a committee member for the South African Music Awards, further cementing his role as a key figure in the industry.
National Spotlight on Expresso
Ahead of the EP’s release, Brown introduced audiences to his new chapter with a live performance on SABC’s Expresso Morning Show. Performing his 3-Step single “Endaweni,” he delivered a semi-live arrangement alongside Bright Breeze on bass guitar and Kay The Violinist, offering a rich, textured take on the record.
The performance also sparked online conversation around his bold fashion statement—a custom Urban Zulu look blending contemporary tailoring with African cultural identity.
Strong Streaming Debut
Upon release, Let There Be Light quickly gained traction across major streaming platforms, earning placements on key editorial playlists such as New Music Friday South Africa, New Music Daily, 3-Step Groove, Mzansi House and New Releases.
A Spiritual Narrative Through Sound
Sung in both English and isiZulu, the EP traverses Soulful House, 3-Step and Deep Afro House, presenting Brown not as a newcomer, but as an artist delivering a deeply intentional and long-awaited body of work.
Structured as a five-chapter journey, the project explores themes of faith, identity and transformation:
- Teach Me How To Pray (feat. Gabriella Blake Brown)
- Find Me
- Endaweni
- Yebo Nkosi (feat. AB Crazy)
- The Fourth Man
Together, these tracks form a cohesive spiritual narrative, grounded in vulnerability and personal alignment, while remaining rooted in the pulse of African dance music.
