A Homecoming Performance Years in the Making

South African genre-bending artist Moonchild Sanelly has officially announced that she will perform her critically acclaimed album Full Moon live in Johannesburg for the very first time. After taking the project across international stages and festivals around the world, the musician is finally bringing the experience back to her hometown audience with tickets now officially on sale.

The announcement follows her recent appearance supporting Doja Cat in Pretoria, where the overwhelming reception from South African fans reignited her desire to stage a dedicated Full Moon concert experience in Johannesburg. Determined to make the event accessible, Moonchild has intentionally kept ticket prices affordable for local supporters.

“Bringing This Show Home Means Everything”

Reflecting on the significance of the moment, Moonchild Sanelly shared an emotional statement about returning to Johannesburg with the album that has elevated her global profile.

“In my writing, I pay homage to the many years that I struggled, because that shaped me. I have toured the world with Full Moon, and bringing this show home to Johannesburg is everything to me. To share my alternative sound with my original Jozi crowd means the absolute world… In fact, it means the Moon!”

The performance is expected to celebrate some of her biggest records from the album, including Scrambled Eggs, Do My Dance, and Falling — songs that have helped cement her as one of South Africa’s most distinctive and fearless musical exports.

The Rise of “Future-Ghetto-Funk”

Known for carving her own lane in the music industry, Moonchild Sanelly first developed her self-described “future-ghetto-funk” sound during her early years between Durban and Johannesburg. Her bold style, unapologetic storytelling, and experimental sonic direction quickly set her apart within the South African music landscape.

Tracks such as I Walk Ye Phara, Midnight Starring, and Makhe, alongside her award-winning debut album Rabulapha!, propelled her into mainstream recognition while still maintaining an alternative edge.

Her growing success soon attracted international collaborators, launching her onto the global stage.

International Collaborations and Worldwide Recognition

Over the years, Moonchild Sanelly has collaborated with some of the world’s biggest artists and creatives, including Beyoncé on My Power, Gorillaz on With Love To An Ex, as well as collaborations with Wizkid, Diplo, Major Lazer, and multiple appearances with Africa Express led by Damon Albarn.

Since signing with UK label Transgressive Records, she has released projects including Nüdes, Phases, and Full Moon, with the latter earning major international acclaim. The album was notably recognised by both Variety and GQ as one of the standout albums of the year.

From Glastonbury to Global Festival Stages

Moonchild Sanelly’s fearless artistry has also earned her invitations to some of the world’s biggest music festivals. Her résumé includes appearances at South by Southwest in both the United States and Australia, where Rolling Stone famously described her performance as “the coolest thing they saw.”

She has also performed at globally recognised festivals including Primavera, Afronation, Boardmasters, Meltdown, Wilderness, Jazz Cafe Festival, and an impressive nine performances at the legendary Glastonbury Festival.

Staying Authentic in Commercial Spaces

Despite achieving international commercial success, Moonchild Sanelly has remained committed to authenticity and self-expression without compromising her identity.

“I fought everything for me to exist as myself and to win as myself,” she previously explained, reflecting on the hardships that shaped her journey following the passing of her mother during her teenage years.

Those experiences, alongside the realities of navigating life as a woman, artist, and mother, continue to fuel the emotionally charged performances and fearless honesty that have become synonymous with her artistry.

Now, with Johannesburg preparing to witness the Full Moon experience live for the first time, Moonchild Sanelly’s homecoming performance is shaping up to be more than just a concert — it is a celebration of resilience, growth, and artistic freedom.
