South African vocalist and songwriter Zusiphe Mchunu Pena, popularly known as Mazet SA, is stepping into a new chapter of her career as one of the leading voices behind the newly launched Scorpion Records project. During an exclusive conversation with TheJournalistDJ.Com, the artist reflected on her musical journey, the struggles she faced in the industry, and her hopes for the future of the label’s upcoming album.
From The West Rand to the Recording Booth
Born Zusiphe Mchunu Pena, Mazet SA explained that her background reflects both her Xhosa and Zulu heritage. Raised in Johannesburg’s West Rand, she said her passion for music began during her school years before evolving into something much more serious.
“I started recording in bedroom studios and that’s when I realised this is really what I want to do,” she shared while reflecting on her early years in music. According to the artist, she officially began recording around 2009, a period she describes as both exciting and challenging.
“The Journey Was Hard”
Mazet SA admitted that navigating the music industry has not been easy. The singer opened up about the emotional and professional struggles artists often face behind the scenes, saying the journey tested her resilience.
Despite the hardships, she credited her faith and support system for keeping her grounded. She also praised the collaborative environment around Scorpion Records, describing it as a space where artists help grow and motivate one another creatively.
The Vision Behind Scorpion Records
The interview took place during a listening session for the upcoming Scorpion Records compilation album, which introduces the label’s sound and creative direction. Mazet SA revealed that the project is deeply rooted in spirituality, healing and discovering new talent.
She described herself as someone who naturally identifies talented artists and believes the album will emotionally connect with listeners, especially those seeking uplifting and spiritually conscious music.
“If you want to know what Scorpion Records is about, listen to this first album,” she said confidently.
A Songwriter Behind the Scenes
One of the biggest revelations from the interview was Mazet SA’s contribution to songs many fans may already know. The artist disclosed that she has worked with several major names in the industry, and has written songs for artists she chose not to publicly name.
Although she admitted that she has not always received full public recognition for her work, she hinted that many successful records carry her songwriting influence behind the scenes.
“There are a lot of songs I’ve worked on,” she revealed, adding that publishing credits remain an important conversation for another day.
Mazet SA’s Love for 3-Step Music
Looking ahead, Mazet SA confirmed that she plans to release solo material after the Scorpion Records album rollout. She revealed that her personal sound leans heavily toward Afro-house-inspired 3-step music, a genre currently dominating South Africa’s dance scene.
For now, however, the focus remains on ensuring the Scorpion Records project receives the attention it deserves before she officially launches her own singles.
New Music Arriving Soon
Mazet SA ended the interview by encouraging fans to support the upcoming Scorpion Records release, which is expected to drop at the end of May. She promised listeners a project packed with strong collaborations, exciting features and “amazing things.”
