CowBoii Interview: The Story Behind iKati Elimhlophe

by admin

On Monday, 29 June 2026, TheJournalistDJ.Com attended an exclusive by-invitation-only listening experience celebrating the music and creative journey of one of Amapiano’s most exciting voices, CowBoii, ahead of the release of his latest album, iKati Elimhlophe.

Known for his distinctive songwriting, emotionally charged lyricism and genre-bending approach to Amapiano, CowBoii welcomed media, industry tastemakers and close collaborators into an intimate space designed to immerse guests in both the music and the story behind the project.

Following the listening session, TheJournalistDJ.Com sat down with the artist to discuss the inspiration behind the album, embracing vulnerability and why this project marks a new chapter in his career.

‘I Was Nervous When I Got Here’

Despite his growing stature in South Africa’s music scene, CowBoii admitted he arrived at the event feeling unexpectedly nervous.

“I was nervous at first. I don’t want to lie,” he laughed.

“I didn’t invite anyone personally, I left everything to my team. Then I started seeing people I hadn’t seen in a long time coming to support me. Seeing them here, where I’m introducing my new music, made me really happy.”

As the evening unfolded, those nerves quickly disappeared.

“For now, I’m feeling good. Everyone is here.”

Rather than hosting a traditional album listening party, CowBoii envisioned an immersive exhibition where guests could experience the album visually as well as sonically.

“My concept was actually to create something like a museum,” he explained.

Although production constraints meant adapting the original vision, the final result resembled an intimate art gallery filled with photographs, installations and written pieces that guided guests through the emotional themes of the album.

“I wanted people to walk around and see CowBoii, not just hear the music.”

He added that the visual storytelling was designed to help listeners understand the deeper meaning behind the songs before pressing play.

“If people don’t understand the music immediately, they can read what I was trying to do and get the full understanding.”

A Letter to Fans That Comes From the Heart

One of the most talked-about features of the exhibition was a heartfelt letter displayed on the gallery wall.

For CowBoii, it was one of the most personal aspects of the experience.

“The letter was about explaining the album and letting my fans know where I am emotionally,” he said.

“I want them to walk with me through every step I take, even as I change.”

He hopes listeners embrace the emotional direction of the project.

“This letter was very special to my heart because I wanted to speak directly to my fans. I hope they enjoy this journey with me.”

Why iKati Elimhlophe?

The album’s title immediately sparked conversation, particularly because of the symbolism attached to white cats in many African communities.

Rather than leaning into superstition, CowBoii says the title represents something entirely different.

iKati Elimhlophe symbolizes healing, emotional change and transformation.”

He explained that every album he creates begins with a story that extends beyond the music itself.

“I’m not trying to tell stories only through songs, but through visuals and everything surrounding the project.”

For him, the white cat became a metaphor for the healing that music has brought both to himself and to his audience.

“I’ve been healing people through music. That’s why the title simply made sense.”

“I Know Who CowBoii Is Now”

Listeners may hear a more emotionally exposed version of CowBoii throughout the album, but the artist insists that doesn’t mean he is vulnerable in the present—it simply reflects where he was while creating the music.

“Most of these songs were written a while ago,” he explained.

While revisiting them, he refined the production and matured the sound without compromising the original emotions.

Today, however, he believes he has reached a new level of confidence.

“I know who CowBoii is now.”

“I know where I stand in the industry. I know what I stand for. This is my moment to say, ‘Watch me.'”

Reflecting on Apple Music’s Africa Rising Recognition

CowBoii also reflected on being featured on Apple Music’s Africa Rising campaign, an achievement he says exceeded anything he imagined early in his career.

“It meant the world.”

“I never thought there were accolades like that for artists.”

Seeing his face represent emerging African talent left a lasting impression.

“I thought, ‘The whole of Africa can see this cover?’ That meant a lot to me.”

He also thanked Apple Music for consistently supporting emerging artists.

“They’ve been recognising new talent every time.”

Returning to His Afro House Roots Through Three-Step

Although many fans associate CowBoii with Amapiano, the album also explores elements of Three-Step.

He says the move wasn’t about chasing trends but reconnecting with where his musical journey began.

“I was making this type of music before Amapiano.”

Back then it was known simply as Afro House with touches of piano influences.

“Three-Step isn’t new for me.”

Having featured on the style through collaborations over the years, he felt it was finally time to fully embrace it within his own body of work.

“I’m good at it, so I had to do it.”

A Message to the Fans

Closing the conversation, CowBoii expressed gratitude to the supporters who have followed his journey from the beginning.

“I appreciate you every day, every time.”

“You are my guys, and I’m your guy.”

He ended with a simple request:

“Please play my album.”

A New Chapter for One of Amapiano’s Most Creative Storytellers

iKati Elimhlophe feels less like a collection of songs and more like a carefully curated artistic statement. From the gallery-inspired exhibition to the handwritten letter and deeply personal themes of healing, identity and emotional growth, CowBoii has created a project that extends well beyond music.
