House music icon recognised for a career spanning nearly three decades
Internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and house music legend Monique Bingham will be honoured with the prestigious 2026 International Recognition Award at the fifth anniversary edition of the Basadi in Music Awards.
Celebrating its milestone fifth year under the theme REWIND, the awards will recognise Bingham’s extraordinary contribution to global house music and her lasting influence on audiences across the world, particularly in South Africa where her music has become deeply embedded in the country’s dance music culture.
A voice that helped shape generations of house music
For almost 30 years, Bingham has built a career defined by soulful vocals, timeless songwriting and genre-defining collaborations. Her work alongside internationally respected producers and South African pioneers such as Black Coffee, Mobi Dixon and DJ Christos has established her as one of the most recognisable voices in house music.
Her catalogue has soundtracked dance floors around the globe while forging a particularly strong connection with South African audiences, where her music has become synonymous with soulful house culture and unforgettable nightlife experiences.
Award celebrates global influence and artistic excellence
The International Recognition Award honours women whose artistry, innovation and cultural impact have left an enduring mark on the global music industry.
For Bingham, the accolade represents not only international recognition but also a celebration of the special relationship she has cultivated with South African fans throughout her career.
“South Africa has held a special place in my heart”
Reacting to the announcement, Bingham described the honour as one she will treasure forever.
“Receiving the 2026 International Recognition Award from Basadi in Music Awards is an honour I will cherish for the rest of my life. I am deeply humbled and incredibly grateful,” she said.
She reflected on her enduring connection with South Africa, saying the country’s passion for house music remains unlike anywhere else in the world.
“The greatest privilege has been creating music that connects people across cultures and generations. I never imagined my music would become part of the soundtrack of so many lives in South Africa. That love has been one of the greatest blessings of my career.”
Bingham also acknowledged the significance of receiving the honour from an organisation dedicated to celebrating women in music, adding that the recognition is especially meaningful as an independent artist whose career has been built through the support of fans, collaborators and friends rather than a major record label.
She confirmed she is looking forward to celebrating the occasion and performing live at the awards ceremony on 8 August.
Basadi in Music Awards celebrates a global icon

Meanwhile, Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema said the theatre is proud to honour an artist whose music has united people across cultures while supporting the Basadi in Music Awards’ mission of celebrating women of exceptional achievement.
Manaileng Maphike added that Bingham’s longevity, artistic excellence and ability to transcend international borders through music make her an ideal recipient of the 2026 International Recognition Award.
