The South African deep house producer says his mission has always been to create music with purpose rather than chase fame or the stereotypical DJ lifestyle.
South African DJ and producer Senior Oat has opened up about the values that continue to shape his music career, revealing that his journey in the industry has never been driven by fame, partying or the image often associated with being a DJ.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, the All In You hitmaker reflected on what motivates him as an artist, explaining that his greatest passion has always been the music itself and the message it carries.
“People always assume being a DJ is about the lifestyle, that was never the goal for me,” he wrote.
Music Over Image
Senior Oat challenged the common perception that success in the DJ industry is defined by extravagant living and celebrity culture.
According to the Limpopo-born producer, he has intentionally chosen a different path.
“I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. I’m trying not to chase the image that comes with the title,” he shared.
Instead, he says his focus remains firmly on producing music that resonates emotionally with listeners rather than simply creating tracks designed to dominate trends or social media.
Creating Music That Takes Listeners on a Journey
Known for blending deep house with soulful, gospel-inspired elements, Senior Oat said the true joy of his career comes from composing music, performing it and witnessing audiences connect with it on a deeper level.
“What I fell in love with is the music. Making it. Playing it. Watching people connect with it,” he explained.
Rather than pursuing chart-topping hits for their own sake, the producer believes music should offer listeners an experience that stays with them long after the song ends.
“It’s not about trending songs but songs that take you on a journey,” he added.

“But even that has a deeper purpose for me, to deliver the gospel message in my music, or that’s what I’m trying to do,” he wrote.

“If people leave remembering the music, that’s great. But if they leave having encountered the message behind it, then I’m satisfied.”
