Uncle Waffles Makes History as Rolling Stone Africa’s Latest Cover Star

by admin

Rolling Stone Africa has officially unveiled Amapiano DJ and producer Uncle Waffles (real name Lungelihle Zwane) as its latest cover star, marking a historic moment for the Swazi-born sensation. Known for her electrifying performances and trendsetting influence, Uncle Waffles has become one of Africa’s most prominent musical exports.

From Viral Sensation to Global Star

Uncle Waffles’ rise to fame is a testament to resilience and self-determination. During South Africa’s strict COVID-19 lockdowns, she taught herself how to DJ, dedicating up to eight hours a day to perfecting her craft. However, it was a viral video of her effortlessly dancing while spinning Young Stunna’s “Adiwele” that catapulted her into the global spotlight. The clip caught the attention of international superstar Drake, who publicly praised her, further amplifying her career.

Her debut EP, Red Dragon (2022), introduced fans to her unique Amapiano sound, with the lead single “Tanzania” achieving quadruple-platinum status in South Africa. She later expanded her artistry with her debut album, Asylum (2023), incorporating hip-hop influences into her signature Amapiano beats.

Breaking Barriers in Music and Media

Uncle Waffles’ latest achievement as the first female artist to grace the cover of Rolling Stone Africa cements her legacy in the Amapiano and Afro House community. Speaking on this milestone, D.R. Bellegarde Smeralda, CEO of Rolling Stone Africa, shared:

“For our February cover, we wanted a talent that represents an African success story—one that resonates with the youth. Uncle Waffles was the perfect choice, blending music, style, and high-energy performance. She is not only making history for herself but for the entire Amapiano and Afro House community in South Africa.”
