Acclaimed South African vocalist and storyteller Nobuhle Khuzwayo has returned with IMVULA: REBIRTH, an emotionally charged project that explores ancestry, identity, vulnerability, healing and the journey back to self.
Following the emotional impact of Imvula, Nobuhle expands the world of the original project with IMVULA: REBIRTH — a body of work she describes not simply as a deluxe edition or continuation, but as a transformation.
The project traces her experiences through sacrifice, ancestral memory, love, survival and purpose, bringing together traditional spirituality and contemporary African sounds.
A Rebirth Rooted in Identity and Ancestry
At the spiritual heart of the project is “Isgubhu Sa Gogo”, translated as “My Grandmother’s Drum”.
The deeply personal composition finds Nobuhle confronting questions around her identity, lineage and the sacrifices she has made throughout her journey.
“It’s about identity, memory, my bloodline, and my own self-sacrifice to the world,” Nobuhle says. “It is when I was most vulnerable.”
The record becomes one of the project’s most intimate moments, using the symbolism of her grandmother’s drum to explore ancestry, womanhood, pain and spiritual inheritance.
Kabza De Small, Young Stunna and Nkosazana Daughter Join the Journey
Nobuhle is joined by an extensive cast of collaborators across the 12-track project.
Kabza De Small and Young Stunna appear on opening track “Izintaba”, while Josiah De Disciple joins her on “Pholisa”.
Nkosazana Daughter features on “Khuleka”, Professor appears on “Lillizela”, and Murumba Pitch joins Nobuhle for the emotionally vulnerable “Ngibula Nguwe”.
Goon Flavour, Mr Lu, Polagor Beatz, Nurogroove, Music Hlonza and Lu also contribute to the project.
Rather than allowing the collaborations to overshadow her story, Nobuhle uses each artist’s distinctive musical identity to build different chapters of the wider REBIRTH narrative.
‘Igama’ Becomes an Affirmation of Survival
One of the project’s defining themes is survival — but Nobuhle is interested in more than simply remaining alive.
On “Igama”, featuring Mr Lu, she reflects on the difficulty of navigating her journey while maintaining a sense of purpose.
“It shows how difficult it has been to be here and continue staying not just alive, but alive with purpose,” she explains. “With ‘Igama’, the name, I am alive.”
The track becomes an affirmation of faith, resilience and the importance of remembering who you are even through difficult seasons.
Nobuhle Turns a Personal Relationship Into Music
Nobuhle ventures into another form of vulnerability on “Ngibula Nguwe” alongside Murumba Pitch.
For the singer, the track marks new territory as she draws directly from complications within a personal relationship.
“It is the first time in my career I have taken a personal relationship complication and turned it into a song,” she says.
That openness adds another dimension to IMVULA: REBIRTH, showing that the project’s exploration of healing stretches beyond ancestry and spirituality into romantic love and emotional relationships.
‘Ithonga’ Pays Tribute to the People Who Carried Her
On “Ithonga”, featuring Goon Flavour, Nobuhle turns her attention towards the people who have helped shape and strengthen her.
The song functions as a praise offering to her community and those whose support has poured into her life.
It forms part of a wider spiritual thread running throughout the album, where individual experiences are repeatedly connected to family, community and ancestry.
A Return to Self
Sonically, IMVULA: REBIRTH brings together live instrumentation, ancestral textures, soulful songwriting and contemporary African production.
The result is a project that captures Nobuhle’s continued evolution not only as a vocalist, but as a woman and storyteller willing to transform intensely personal experiences into music.
Through collaborations with some of African music’s most recognisable voices and producers, Nobuhle ultimately uses REBIRTH to make a larger statement about the interconnected nature of memory, pain and healing.
IMVULA: REBIRTH is therefore less about returning to where Imvula started and more about recognising the person who has emerged from everything that happened afterwards.
It is a return to identity, ancestry and purpose — a musical prayer for survival and, ultimately, rebirth.
