31-year-old Durbanite, Nokuphiwa Mbatha affectionately known as Lizwi has come full circle. The afro tribal powerhouse is running in her lane and her new single ‘Ukhona’ is set to be a winner.
Her latest offering is a Zulu tribal gospel song that pays homage to her roots and an affirmation of her beliefs.
On this track, Lizwi takes the audience on a spiritual journey and one can’t help but be transported to a place of calmness as she prays through the lyrics.
A sense of deep emotions and rawness can be felt throughout the song. Moreover, the track is relatable as it offers guidance, strength and reassurance.
It also uplifts one and leaves you with a sense that everything will be okay regardless of the challenges and situation one might be facing.
‘Ukhona’ means you are here, and here she acknowledges a higher power that has helped her grow from strength to strength and overcome numerous obstacles.
With the assistance of Aso Tandwa and mixes from Kususa, AudioGasmic Soundz, Chronical Deep, Fisto De Soul and Kay-9ineand, Lizwi’s vocal ability and versatility is evident from the onset.
The sound is contagious and plays on her vocal strength and tribal influence, without straying too far away from the afro house sound we have come to know her for.
With the EP planned to be released in February 2021, audiences will be in for a treat as she continues on this journey of self-discovery and shares more of her spiritual side through her music.
The EP will feature more gospel tracks, and have the same afro house sound with tribal influences.
With ‘Ukhona’ getting positive reviews locally and internationally, in 2021 audiences can expect more features with local industry heavyweights such as Malumz on Decks, DJ Malone and Revolution as well as international producers.
‘Ukhona’ is available on YouTube, Spotify, YouTube Music and Deezer. On this interview, Lizwi opens up about her journey.
