South African fans gave Grammy Award winning singer, Tyla, a hero’s welcome back home when she landed in South Africa at the OR Tambo International Airport on March 30th.
After the successful release of her chart-topping debut album on 22 March 2024, the Amapiano Pop/R&B sensation touched down on home soil to celebrate her win with friends, family, and fans alike.
The 22-year-old Johannesburg native has been burning the midnight oil flying the country’s flag high, and many South Africans gathered at the airport to give her resounding cheers.
It has been nothing but an upward spiral for the songstress, who was catapulted to international stardom after her 2023 multiplatinum single “Water” made top ten charts in multiple countries, including the United States and United Kingdom.
It became the first song by a South African solo artist to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years and went on to win the inaugural Best African Music Performance award during the 66th instalment of the Grammy Awards last month.
That instantly made Tyla the youngest African artist to win a Grammy Award and was a reassuring nod that she’s making the right moves in the music industry.
The record-breaking track also drew three million views in three days after the music video was released and had celebrities and social media users all over the world doing the Water challenge.
Tyla is not showing signs of slowing down. Just a few days after the release of her self-titled album “TYLA”, the body of work recorded the biggest opening day on Spotify for a South African artist, amassing more than seven million streams.
Many of her tracks have charted in the top 10 across the globe, including countries like South Africa, the Maldives and Australia, and the full album has topped charts in Tunisia and Papua New Guinea.
The 14-track full length studio album features artists such as US rapper Travis Scott on the “Water” remix, Nigerian singer-songwriter and producer Tems on “No.1”, US singer Becky G on “On My Body” and South African producer Kelvin Momo on the intro.
