While her songwriting has resonated with millions of listeners, the artist behind the words has largely remained out of the public eye.
Now, Makhanj is ready to tell her own story.
The acclaimed songwriter has officially announced her highly anticipated debut album, Transkei, a deeply personal project that marks her transition from celebrated songwriter to recording artist. The album represents years of self-discovery and creative growth, offering listeners an intimate look into the experiences, culture and identity that have shaped her journey.
A Story of Identity, Home and Belonging
More than just a collection of songs, Transkei explores themes of identity, belonging and heritage. Inspired by memory and the richness of South African culture, the album reflects on the people, places and experiences that define who we are.
According to Makhanj, the project serves as both a personal introduction and an invitation for listeners to connect with their own stories.
“Transkei is my way of introducing myself to the world—not only as an artist, but as a storyteller,” she says. “For years I’ve expressed myself through music written for others. This album is different because it’s deeply personal. Every song carries a piece of my journey, my culture and the people who have shaped who I am. I hope listeners find pieces of themselves in these stories too.”

While the album’s title references a place that holds historical and cultural significance, Makhanj says Transkei represents something much broader than geography.
For the artist, it symbolizes home in every sense of the word—our roots, languages, memories and the experiences that continue to shape our identities. Throughout the project, she embraces vulnerability and honesty, creating music that is both deeply personal and universally relatable.
Rather than following commercial trends, the album prioritizes storytelling, celebrating African identity while highlighting the shared human experiences that connect people across cultures.
An All-Women Creative Team Brings the Vision to Life
The creative vision behind Transkei extends beyond the music itself. Makhanj assembled an all-women creative team to develop the album’s visual identity, reflecting the project’s themes of heritage, authenticity and belonging.
Renowned multidisciplinary artist Tony Gum led the creative direction, crafting a visual language that complements the album’s emotional and cultural narrative. Photographer Nondumiso Shange translated that vision into a striking body of imagery, capturing both the intimacy and strength that define the project.
“From the very beginning, I wanted Transkei to feel honest,” Makhanj explains. “Working with women who understood that vision allowed us to create something that feels true to who I am. Every image, every visual and every creative decision became part of telling the story of this album.”

As audiences increasingly seek authenticity from the artists they support, Transkei arrives as both a musical statement and a celebration of African storytelling.
Having spent years helping shape the sound of amapiano from behind the scenes, Makhanj is now stepping confidently into the spotlight with her own voice leading the conversation.
