South African Designer Thebe Magugu Turns DJ

by admin

In a thrilling crossover from fashion to music, South African designer Thebe Magugu has stepped into the DJ booth, unveiling his first set dedicated to his uncle, Teko Magugu.

Thebe’s debut performance took place at Ghostworld in Carfax, Johannesburg, where he skillfully blended nostalgic sounds with contemporary beats.

Titled “Teko’s Tavern,” the set pays homage to the garage transformed into a tavern by Thebe’s uncle in Galeshewe township. Reflecting on his roots, Thebe shared,

“I was responsible for the CDs—shoutout to Windows Media Player! Playing tracks like DJ Fresh’s ‘Say It Right’ and DJ Cleo’s ‘Es’khaleni Phase 4’ was such a joy. Teko’s Tavern became a gathering point for long-lasting friendships, and I wanted to bring that spirit to life through music.”

The set features a vibrant mix, intertwining the classic sounds of house music with the infectious rhythms of gqom.

“I like this idea of taking the house of then and mixing it with the gqom of now,”

Thebe explained.

“They make sense together because both are so progressive.”

In addition to his musical debut, Thebe also showcased his fashion line, sporting the new Sisterhood Tank Top in Black, which will be available for purchase starting November 7, 2024, at Magugu House and online at www.thebemagugu.com.

The tracklist for the evening included hits from renowned artists, ensuring an electric atmosphere. Highlights included:

  1. Mr Thela – Thunderstorms
  2. DJ Fresh – Say It Right
  3. General C’mamane & Asambeni – Gijima
  4. AmaGhost Obusted ft Thobeka – Baleka Baleka
  5. AkiidMusiq – Uyavunuza
  6. Nhani – Okkkkkk
