The year 2024 has solidified DJ Lag as a global powerhouse in the world of music. The multi-award-winning artist has had an extraordinary run, thanks to his viral hit single Hade Boss and the success of his sophomore album, The Rebellion. With over 900 million engagements on TikTok and 70 million streams this year, DJ Lag has captured the hearts of listeners worldwide, proving why he remains a pivotal figure in African dance music.
A Year of Milestones
DJ Lag’s international tour has been nothing short of groundbreaking. Spanning the USA, UK, Europe, Africa, and Asia, his performances have brought the electrifying energy of Gqom to a global stage. The tour culminates in an unforgettable 15,000-capacity show at London’s Drumsheds on December 6th, marking a triumphant close to an epic year.
Beyond the stage, DJ Lag has been a constant presence in the media, earning extensive features in local and international outlets and prominent placement in music storefronts. His recognition as Apple Music’s Isgubhu artist for 2024 highlights his influential role in shaping African dance music and expanding its reach.
Johannesburg Summer Residency
This year also saw DJ Lag taking over Johannesburg’s airwaves through his dynamic YFM Summer Residency. Collaborating with renowned artists such as 3-Step Pioneer, Thakzin, Vigro Deep, and Black Motion, he delivered electrifying sets that pushed Gqom’s boundaries and left an indelible mark on the city’s music scene.
The “Yebo” Remix: A Perfect Fusion
Adding to his accomplishments, DJ Lag has released a highly anticipated remix of Yebo, a standout track from The Rebellion. Reimagined by Amapiano producer Jay Music, the remix combines the raw energy of Gqom with the groove of Amapiano, creating a hard-hitting, genre-blending masterpiece.
“I had a short list of people I wanted to flip the original for me, and Jay was right at the top,”
DJ Lag shared.
“I’ve always admired his ability to bring his jaw-breaking bass and drums to Amapiano, and it made perfect sense for a track like Yebo.”
For Jay Music, collaborating with DJ Lag was a career-defining moment. “Working on this remix was surreal. Even though we weren’t in the same studio, the energy came through in every beat. It felt like bridging two worlds—melding the groove of Amapiano with the energy of Gqom,” he said.
Looking Ahead
The momentum doesn’t stop here. DJ Lag is set to embark on another international tour in 2025, with stops in the USA, Canada, Australia, Asia, the UK, and Europe. Fans can also look forward to his feature on the DC10 Podcast in March and his much-anticipated performance at Ibiza’s season opening in April.
On the music front, DJ Lag promises exciting collaborations with Moonchild Sanelly, Thakzin, Sir Trill, and more. As the global dance music scene awaits his next move, one thing is certain: DJ Lag is just getting started.
