Kilimanjaro hitmaker returns with a bold anthem
Black is Brown’s rising star, Mema_Percent, has released his latest single titled Manje Clean, a nostalgic yet modern take on South African street culture through sound. Known for penning the viral Kilimanjaro, the Soweto-born artist is back with an Amapiano banger that draws from old school Kwaito influences.
Teaming up with the best in the game
The track sees Mema_Percent join forces with Amapiano heavyweight Mr JazziQ, alongside Officixl RSA and Lintonto, creating a gritty, high-energy anthem that fuses generations of sound. The production carries a distinctly Kwaito groove while rooted in the pulsating basslines of Amapiano, offering a layered listening experience.
A tribute to Mandoza and the Kwaito era
Speaking about the inspiration behind Manje Clean, Mema_Percent explains that the track is a personal homage to Kwaito legend Mandoza. “‘Manje’ means ‘Now’, representing that I’m the Kwaito star I used to idolise. ‘Clean’ means I’m doing it cleanly,” he says, referring to his modern, polished approach to the genre fusion.
Continuing the Stayela legacy
Manje Clean follows his debut single Stayela, continuing a narrative that blends personal style, musical expression, and township street culture. Mema_Percent describes this musical direction as a platform for self-expression.
“Music is everywhere, and it plays a big role in South African culture. Since the introduction of TikTok, it’s become easier for the style and music to move and influence South African youth culture,”
he shares.
From classroom bars to studio stars
Born and raised in Soweto, Mema_Percent wrote his first song in Grade 6 and kept performing it through Grade 8. While soccer dominated his high school years, he rediscovered music after friends encouraged him back into the studio. A freestyle he posted online caught the attention of Mr JazziQ, who invited him to collaborate—and the rest is history.
