A Night of History and Celebration

TheJournalistDJ.com caught up with Bonga Siphesihle Makhanya, Deputy Chairperson of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), at the Scorpion Kings concert — an event he describes as “a historic night” for South African music and youth culture.

Why NYDA Backed Scorpion Kings

According to Makhanya, the NYDA’s involvement is about more than entertainment:

“Scorpion Kings has been at the center of the development of the creative sector in this country. For us, the creative sector is one of the fundamental sectors that can drive the economy forward, and that’s why we’re here to support.”

The agency deployed over 150 young people through its Young Creators Program, giving them hands-on experience in event management and production by volunteering at the show.

Opening More Doors for Young Artists

Traditionally, NYDA funding leaned toward agriculture and business entrepreneurship. But Makhanya says the new board is determined to change that:

“We’ve made a clear plan to be deliberate about supporting young artists. By buying them equipment, by giving them resources to be sustainable — we want to see more talent come through specifically via the NYDA.”

He confirmed that NYDA currently offers grants up to R250,000, with talks underway to expand support to R500,000, making it possible for young DJs, producers, and creatives to access funding for studios, equipment, and platforms.

Building a Creative Pipeline

Makhanya envisions a future where young South Africans can confidently say:

“Today, I’ve got my own studio because of NYDA. I’ve got my own platform, fully equipped and resourced through the NYDA.”

This focus aims to create a pipeline of talent and empower the next generation of cultural leaders in music, arts, and creative entrepreneurship.

Taking Amapiano and Afro-Tech to the World

Looking ahead, NYDA plans to have a stronger presence across the music scene.

“This is the start of something big. You’ll definitely see us at amapiano events, Afrotech, deep house, and also grassroots projects at township level. We want to cut across all corners of the country in reaching young people in the arts.”

A Final Word

Closing off, Makhanya had a message for the youth and partygoers alike:

“Please don’t drink and drive. Stay safe. Enjoy the music — and let’s take amapiano to the world.”
