South African Afro Tech DJ and producer Drega says the Afro Tech movement is entering an exciting new era, with the genre rapidly evolving both locally and globally. Speaking during a lively interview at the Metro FM Music Awards weekend, the Eastern Cape-born artist reflected on the culture, his recent achievements, and his plans for a new album.
“Afro Tech Is Growing So Fast”
Known for his energetic edits and hard-hitting Afro Tech sound, Drega — real name Yanga Mzimkhulu Zodala — spoke confidently about the future of the genre, describing its growth as “amazing.”
“Everyone is bootlegging. I’m doing edits,”
he laughed, explaining that his approach is all about standing out creatively.
When asked where he sees Afro Tech heading, Drega expressed optimism about the genre’s direction.
“It’s growing so fast. It’s amazing. I don’t know where it’s going, but I feel like it’s going on a dope route,” he said.
“I love it at this moment. No one knows tomorrow, but if you feel good about something, that means it’s gonna do good. So I feel good about Afro Tech.”
Celebrating a Major Career Milestone
During the interview, Drega also revealed that he had just received a plaque for the success of his hit collaboration “Mabebuza,” thanking his team and supporters for helping the song make an impact.
“I just received a plaque from the company. Thanks to Mayonie, thanks to Universal,” he said excitedly.
“We’re celebrating all the achievements.”
The producer also gave flowers to collaborators and remixers involved in the project, highlighting the collective spirit that continues to drive Afro Tech culture forward.
Mystery Surrounds Upcoming Album
Although fans were eager to hear more about his upcoming album, Drega intentionally kept details under wraps, teasing that he wants the project to arrive as a surprise.
“I’m gonna tell you nothing right now until the next interview,”
he joked when asked about the album title, concept, and release date.
“I’m trying to surprise you.”
Despite keeping the details secret, Drega confirmed that the album is set to drop later this year, adding even more anticipation around the next chapter of his career.
Eastern Cape Energy Taking Over Afro Tech
Representing the Eastern Cape while pushing a futuristic Afro Tech sound, Drega continues to position himself as one of the genre’s most exciting young voices. From viral edits to international dancefloor-ready productions, the producer says he is focused on having fun while taking Afro Tech to new heights.
