A Young Artist With Big Dreams
Emerging artist Desty, whose real name is Abonge Mnyele, is carving out his own path in South Africa’s music scene, drawing inspiration from his roots in Orange Farm and his deep love for music.
Speaking to TheJournalistDJ.Com, Desty described himself as a young and talented artist who makes music primarily because of his passion for it, rather than for financial gain.
“I do music because I love music, not for money.”
From FL Mobile to Music Production
Desty’s journey into music started while he was in Grade 9 in 2022. His early production experiments began on his cellphone using FL Mobile, the mobile version of Fruity Loops.
By the time he reached matric, he had progressed into learning music production more seriously, developing his skills and beginning to create his own music.
While the journey started informally, Desty says he became serious about pursuing music professionally this year.
A Major Moment With “Focus”
One of the biggest milestones in Desty’s young career came with his appearance on “Focus,” a collaboration with his friend Donwa.
The song was part of the ATK MusiQ album launch, where Desty was present to celebrate the milestone and his contribution to the project.
For the young artist, the moment carries particular significance because of where the song was created.
According to Desty, “Focus” is a song that comes from the ghetto, with the production taking place in a shack, making its journey to an album launch even more meaningful.

“Nyaks In Series” To Showcase the Kasi Movement
Desty is already looking ahead to his next chapter, revealing that he is currently working on a mixtape titled “Nyaks In Series.”
The project is centred around the Kasi movement, reflecting the environment and culture that have influenced his artistic identity.
Desty says the mixtape is expected to drop in September, potentially on Spring Day or on his birthday, 24 September.
For now, the young artist is keeping fans waiting and encouraging them to stay tuned.
Representing Orange Farm and the Kasi
For Desty, his background is an important part of his identity as an artist. Rather than distancing himself from his roots, he embraces his kasi upbringing as part of his story.
He believes his journey can eventually take him from Orange Farm to some of the biggest stages.
“I’m a very young, talented guy from a Kasi, and I believe that one day I will make it on the big stage.”
