South African producer Tsebebe Moroke is looking back at the cultural foundations of Amapiano with his latest single, “Sbwl Sama Grootman,” the first taste of his forthcoming project, SOULFUL PRINCE 4.0.
The new project is scheduled for release on 18 September 2026, with “Sbwl Sama Grootman” appearing as its sixth track and setting the tone for Moroke’s latest musical chapter.
A Tribute to an Era That Shaped Amapiano
“Sbwl Sama Grootman” draws inspiration from an important period in Amapiano’s evolution — a time when the genre was becoming much more than a sound coming out of South Africa’s townships.
As Amapiano grew, it developed its own visual and cultural language. Music, street fashion, luxury brands, nightlife and lifestyle became increasingly interconnected, while certain personalities emerged as recognisable figures within the movement.
It is this era and its influence that Moroke revisits on his latest record.
“‘Sbwl Sama Grootman’ comes from my appreciation of the foundation of Amapiano and the sounds that moved the streets in the early days,”
Moroke explains.
“I was drawn to the melodies, the basslines and the way the instrumentation could create a feeling without needing too much. I wanted to take those elements and interpret them through my own sound.”
The Meaning Behind “Grootman”
For Moroke, the song’s title is also a direct reference to the personalities and lifestyle that became synonymous with Amapiano as the genre’s cultural influence expanded.
“The title also comes from that era of Amapiano where the music, fashion, luxury brands and the people driving the culture were all connected. The ‘Grootman’ became part of that identity,”
he says.
Rather than simply recreating an earlier Amapiano sound, Moroke says he spent time studying the genre’s evolution and thinking about how its musical foundations could be interpreted through his own production style.
“When I was working on the song, I spent a lot of time reflecting on the journey of Amapiano, where it started, how it developed and where it is now. That history really influenced me instrumentally and creatively.”
Respecting the Past While Creating Something New
That reflection ultimately became the creative foundation of “Sbwl Sama Grootman,” with Moroke positioning the record as both a tribute to the genre’s early identity and an expression of where he stands musically today.
“This song is my way of paying respect to that foundation while giving people my own version of what that sound means to me,” he says.
The single also introduces listeners to the world of SOULFUL PRINCE 4.0, continuing Moroke’s ongoing Soulful Prince series while signalling the next phase of his sound.
