Sol Stringer Talks Sound and His Evolution Beyond Muzart

A Flamboyant Entrance That Sets the Tone

Sol Stringer pulled up with undeniable flair, flamboyant, floral and unapologetically expressive. The look sparked instant banter, with Sol joking that the outfit might not survive long in his wardrobe after the shoot. Still, it perfectly mirrored the energy of the moment: creative, playful and deeply rooted in self-expression.

Who Is Sol Stringer?

Sol Stringer is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, DJ and creative collaborator whose fingerprints are all over South Africa’s live music culture. While he now moves fluidly between DJ booths and live stages, many music lovers first came to know him as the guitarist of the popular Afro-pop and soul band Muzart.

Muzart: A Defining Chapter in South African Soul Music

Formed around 2009, Muzart became known for their rich, live, soulful sound and quickly earned a loyal following. The group originally featured Rorisang Thandekiso on vocals, Victor Chauke on keys and vocals, Tshegofatso “Tazzy” Lehutso on keys and vocals, Jabu Jnr. Khanyile as DJ and producer, and Sol Mosetle — now known as Sol Stringer — on guitar.

Muzart rose to prominence with standout records like “Jukebox”, becoming synonymous with authentic live performance and Afro-soul excellence. As the years went on, the group experienced lineup changes, with Sol and Jabu Jnr forming Smiley Freaks, while Vic, Tazzy and Rorisang continued under the Muzart name.

Loss, Legacy and Moving Forward

The passing of Nkanyiso “Jabu Jnr” Khanyile in 2020 marked a deeply emotional and defining moment for everyone connected to Muzart. His death had a profound impact on the group and the broader music community, closing a significant chapter while cementing the band’s legacy in South African music history.

From Guitarist to DJ: A Natural Progression

Sol Stringer’s transition into DJing didn’t come out of nowhere. Long before stepping fully into the DJ space, he had been performing alongside DJs professionally since 2007–2008, starting with DJ Terrence. Over the years, he became a familiar presence on major stages, playing guitar for artists such as DJ Bongz, Lulo Café, A-Man, Webster and Tweety.

After years of being featured as the live element in DJ sets, Sol decided it was time to fully own the moment — merging his guitar mastery with DJing and stepping into a more central role.

A Sound Rooted in Jazz, Broken Beat and 3-Step

Sonically, Sol Stringer gravitates toward textured, soulful and rhythm-driven sounds. His taste spans broken beat, jazz influences, 3-step and touches of accessible, commercial appeal. This fusion allows him to bridge live musicianship and dancefloor culture seamlessly — a balance few artists manage with such authenticity.

Current Music and Key Collaborations

At present, Sol is pushing a collaborative record with DJ Clock titled “Cruisin’”, delivered in an indigenous language. The track features Chymamusique, A-Cod, Kinosoul and Decency, with Sol adding his unmistakable guitar work. He also sends heartfelt well-wishes to A-Cod on his recovery.

Beyond that, Sol is working closely with his brothers Sai and Ribatone — widely known for his work with Black Coffee — while developing new solo DJ material that fully fuses live guitar with electronic production.

Eyes on 2025: “Watch This Space”

Reflecting on the industry post-COVID, Sol acknowledges the challenges, especially within the live gigging economy. Still, his outlook remains optimistic. With renewed momentum heading into 2025, he believes this is a season of rebuilding, experimentation and growth.
