From Pietermaritzburg Roots to a Purpose-Driven Musical Journey
Emerging South African artist UDOTI UDEMEDi is proving that success in music is not always about chasing trends or instant fame. Instead, the Pietermaritzburg-born musician is building a career rooted in authenticity, spirituality and meaningful storytelling.
Raised in KwaZulu-Natal within a close-knit environment shaped by family, church and community, UDOTI UDEMEDi says his upbringing laid the foundation for the artist he is becoming today.
“I grew up in a grounded environment close to family, church and community,” he explains. “That environment taught me discipline, respect and to find value in small things.”
These early influences continue to shape both his music and his outlook on life.
Music Became More Than Entertainment
Growing up, music was a constant presence in his life. Gospel music filled church gatherings, maskandi played in homes and celebrations, while hip-hop and amapiano became the soundtrack of friendships and everyday experiences.
Over time, music evolved into something far more significant.
“It felt like the language I understood best,” says UDOTI UDEMEDi.
Rather than viewing music as a pathway to celebrity, he discovered it as a tool for self-expression and emotional honesty.
“It wasn’t about fame. It was about the fact that I could say things in a song that I couldn’t say any other way.”
Finding His Voice Through Three Step
Today, UDOTI UDEMEDi is becoming one of the emerging voices within Three Step, South Africa’s rapidly growing genre that blends rhythmic sophistication with emotional depth.
For the artist, Three Step is more than a musical style.
“Three Step is intentional, rhythmic and can be even spiritual,” he says. “It’s rooted in South African sound but it moves with purpose. It’s music you can feel in your chest and think about after.”
His approach brings together spirituality, personal reflection and cultural identity, helping him stand apart within the evolving movement.
‘Asambeni’ Introduces a Unique Musical Identity
Listeners first experienced UDOTI UDEMEDi’s vision through his breakout single, Asambeni.
The song blends prayer, storytelling and Zulu identity while exploring themes of spiritual guidance, perseverance and overcoming life’s obstacles. The track mirrors his own journey as an independent artist navigating the challenges of the music industry while remaining grounded in faith.
The release has become an important milestone in establishing his signature sound and message.
Overcoming the Challenges of Independence
Like many emerging artists, UDOTI UDEMEDi’s path has been marked by obstacles.
“Access, consistency and self-doubt were some of the biggest struggles,” he says. “Funding studio time, getting into the right rooms and believing your sound matters when you’re not seeing immediate results.”
Despite moments of uncertainty, he credits prayer, discipline and persistence for helping him remain focused on his long-term vision.
“Prayer keeps me grounded, and the belief that if I don’t quit, the work will open doors.”
Ziiki Media Camp Sparks a Turning Point
A major breakthrough came earlier this year when UDOTI UDEMEDi participated in a creative camp hosted by Ziiki Media in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The camp brought together artists, producers and collaborators including K-Zaka, Ice Cue and Snaka, creating a collaborative environment that helped shape the foundation of his forthcoming album.
“Being in that room with other artists and producers made me realise this is real,” he says. “If I stay consistent, I can build something that lasts.”
The experience also strengthened his relationship with Ziiki Media, which currently provides label and artist development support.
“What Ziiki Media taught me is structure, professionalism and how to treat music like a business without losing the art.”
Building a Legacy Beyond Trends
As he prepares to release his forthcoming album later this year, UDOTI UDEMEDi hopes audiences will connect with the authenticity and sacrifice behind every song.
“Every session, every song is built on prayer, sacrifice and showing up when it’s hard,” he says. “Nothing was handed to me.”
For the artist, success is measured by impact rather than popularity.
“Success for me is peace of mind, impact and being able to open doors for others from PMB. I want to make music that lasts longer than trends.”
A Message for the Next Generation
As Three Step continues to evolve and attract wider audiences, UDOTI UDEMEDi is positioning himself as one of the artists bringing depth, spirituality and purpose to its future.
His message to aspiring artists remains simple yet powerful.
“Don’t wait for someone to save you. Learn the craft, protect your peace, go to God for direction and work like nobody’s watching. Your location isn’t a limitation. Your discipline is.”
