South African Amapiano singer Soulful G is ready to properly reintroduce herself to the music scene after taking some time away and this time, she says she understands herself and her artistry better.
Known for her soulful vocals and her contribution to the Amapiano hit “uThando” alongside Soa Mattrix and Shaun 101, Soulful G recently chat with TheJournalistDJ.com to talk about her return, forthcoming single “Thumela” and the EP she is currently preparing.
“I’m back, guys. I’m back like I never left,”
she declared during the conversation.
Stepping away helped Soulful G understand herself
While Soulful G may have appeared relatively quiet musically, her time away was intentional.
The singer explained that she needed to step away from the industry to better understand who she was beyond her career.
“I took a break from the industry to understand Soulful G. Now I really know the difference between the two,”
she said, referring to the distinction between herself personally and the artist audiences know.
It is a lesson that appears to be shaping the next phase of her career, with Soulful G returning with renewed energy and a clearer idea of what she wants from music.
‘Thumela’ gives her the same feeling as ‘uThando’
At the centre of her comeback is “Thumela,” a new love song that Soulful G is preparing to release in October.
While she did not reveal every detail surrounding the record during the interview, she made a significant comparison: the song gives her the same feeling she experienced when recording “uThando.”
For an artist whose name became widely recognised through “uThando,” that feeling has understandably left her excited about what “Thumela” could become.
Soulful G described the forthcoming track as a love song and enthusiastically sang a portion of it during the interview, giving TheJournalistDJ.com an early taste of what she has been working on.
A new EP is also on the way
“Thumela” is only the beginning.
Soulful G confirmed that she is working on an EP, with several collaborators expected to form part of the project.
During the conversation, she mentioned artists and producers including Soa Mattrix, as well as several other collaborators she has been recording with.
“Guys, I’m back for everything,” she said.
The project will remain rooted in Amapiano, but Soulful G does not want listeners to expect only one version of her.
‘I want to give people a different feel of my voice’
Part of Soulful G’s new chapter involves experimenting with the different spaces her voice can occupy.
Although she is closely associated with the soulful side of Amapiano, the singer says she wants to become more versatile and work with artists whose sounds might not immediately seem like an obvious match for hers.
“I want to give people a different feel of my voice,” she explained.
For Soulful G, that means refusing to be boxed into one particular interpretation of Amapiano and instead exploring what happens when her softer vocal approach meets different styles and generations within the genre.
Humility remains one of her biggest industry lessons
Success has also taught Soulful G lessons beyond making music.
Asked what she has learned since entering the spotlight, she immediately highlighted humility, networking and maintaining relationships.
She stressed the importance of not burning bridges and respecting everyone in the industry, including upcoming artists.
“Be humble,” she said. “Don’t burn your relationships. Know people. Network if you have to.”
It is an outlook she believes has contributed to her longevity and ability to continue working even after periods when she was less visible publicly.
Soulful G has advice for upcoming artists
Having experienced both the excitement of a major Amapiano record and the realities that come with navigating the music business, Soulful G also had some advice for artists still trying to find their way.
“Don’t be hard on yourself. Keep on doing it. Go outside, meet people,” she said.
She encouraged young artists to network, put themselves out there and resist giving up when things do not immediately happen.
“Be humble. Respect the game. Just be you.”
Now, Soulful G appears ready to follow her own advice.
With “Thumela” arriving first and an EP following, the singer is stepping back into the spotlight with something she did not necessarily have when “uThando” introduced her to a wider audience — a clearer understanding of herself.
And as she puts it: “I’m back like I never left.”
