For most business executives, a long-haul flight is an opportunity to catch up on emails, prepare for the next meeting or finally get a few hours of sleep. For Theo Mseka, better known as DJ MidTempo, it is often where the music starts.
By day, Mseka operates in the high-pressure world of corporate leadership as CEO and Managing Director of immowelt and AVIV Germany GmbH. Away from the boardroom, however, he is DJ MidTempo — a South African artist, vinyl collector, producer and founder of Tahoe Studios whose music moves between Afro House, Afro Tech, Amapiano, 3-Step and electronic influences.
Now the two seemingly different sides of his life are colliding on his debut album, Cheza Kidogo, a 12-track project set for release on 11 September 2026 via Tahoe Studios.
Remarkably, Mseka estimates that approximately 70% of the album was produced while travelling, much of it aboard flights connecting Johannesburg, Cape Town and Berlin.
Laptop open. Headphones on. Somewhere above the clouds, the CEO becomes the DJ.
The boardroom and the dancefloor
It is an unusual balancing act.
Mseka has spent more than two decades working in executive leadership across global markets. Today, he leads major businesses in Germany’s real-estate technology sector while simultaneously developing his career as an electronic music producer.
Rather than seeing business and music as competing identities, Mseka’s journey suggests the two can coexist.
The discipline, decision-making and relentless schedule of executive life meet a completely different side of his personality when he enters the studio — creativity, experimentation and the freedom to make something without knowing exactly where it will lead.
Cheza Kidogo, Swahili for “dance a little,” is the result.
The album brings together the African electronic sounds that have shaped DJ MidTempo with the influence of Berlin, the city he currently spends much of his time in. His musical identity, however, remains strongly connected to South Africa, with the project featuring a range of South African collaborators and sounds rooted in the country’s thriving dance music culture.
DJ MidTempo’s existing music profile identifies South Africa as his primary market and describes his work as spanning Afro House, 3-Step and electronic music.
An album literally made in the air
The story behind Cheza Kidogo becomes even more unusual when looking at where some of its songs were created.
While other passengers watched movies or slept, Mseka frequently transformed his seat into a miniature production studio — headphones connected, laptop open and ideas being developed thousands of metres above the ground.
One of the album’s most unusual records, “Bu Islak Sokaklarda,” was born entirely at approximately 33,000 feet.
The Turkish-language track draws its lyrics from a poem written by a close friend during Mseka’s five-year chapter working with Turkish real-estate platform Hepsiemlak.
The record also reflects the increasingly international world DJ MidTempo occupies: an African artist moving between South Africa and Berlin, creating a Turkish-language song in the sky while building an album rooted heavily in African electronic music.
South Africa remains at the heart of the story
Despite his international corporate career and strong connection to Berlin, Cheza Kidogo keeps returning to South Africa.
Among the records being positioned strongly for the South African market are “Zimbali” with Deestar ZA featuring Luvintage and K.D.M Luminous, “Nobody Else” with August Muzika, Wade Yarrow and Maijor Habe, “Sabela” with Kamza HeavyPoint and Yarah Lerah, “Zaka” with August Muzika and NATASHA MD, and “Durban Nights” with Rocktea and Still Matah.
The collaborations underline an important part of DJ MidTempo’s broader ambition: he isn’t simply interested in building his own profile.
Through Tahoe Studios, he wants to create opportunities for African talent and help take African and hybrid electronic sounds to international audiences.
Success outside music has given DJ MidTempo a different kind of freedom
There is another interesting dimension to Mseka’s arrival as an artist.
Unlike many emerging musicians, his livelihood does not depend entirely on chasing the next booking, streaming trend or hit record.
His established corporate career gives DJ MidTempo an unusual degree of creative independence.
That freedom allows him to approach music from the perspective of a lifelong enthusiast — someone who collected vinyl and DJed long before the producer identity arrived — while still applying the ambition and strategic thinking that have defined his executive career.
It also raises an intriguing question at the heart of his story: what happens when someone who has already achieved success in one demanding world decides to start again in another?
With Cheza Kidogo, Mseka appears determined to find out.
From Johannesburg to Berlin — and back again
The geographical movement behind DJ MidTempo is central to his sound.
South Africa provides the musical heartbeat: Afro House, Afro Tech, Amapiano and 3-Step.
Berlin adds another layer — electronic experimentation, club culture and a different creative environment.
Rather than choosing between the two, DJ MidTempo is attempting to occupy both spaces.
That philosophy extends across Cheza Kidogo, which moves between South African collaborations and songs connected to Tanzania, Turkey, Germany and the wider African continent.
A deeply personal debut
Behind the international collaborations and executive titles, however, are deeply personal stories.
“Kalemela” pays tribute to the village of Kalemela in Tanzania’s Mwanza region, where Mseka’s father comes from.
The name also echoes the Greek word “Kalimera”, meaning “good morning”, connecting the record to Thessaloniki, Greece, where Mseka was born.
That connection becomes even more significant because Mseka was born on 11 September at 3:05am.
His debut album will consequently arrive on his birthday, 11 September 2026.
He has even developed a personal DJ ritual around the story: whenever he is performing a set that continues beyond 3:05am, “Kalemela” is intended to play at exactly that time — connecting his birthplace, his father’s homeland and his life behind the decks.
Cheza Kidogo arrives September 11
The album’s lead single, “Nobody Else,” brings together DJ MidTempo, August Muzika, Wade Yarrow and Maijor Habe, combining an Afro-driven production with English-language vocals designed to travel beyond one market.
Across its 12 tracks, Cheza Kidogo ultimately documents more than DJ MidTempo’s emergence as a producer.
It tells the story of a man moving constantly between identities, countries and responsibilities — CEO and DJ, businessman and creative, South Africa and Berlin, boardrooms and dancefloors.
And sometimes, somewhere between those worlds, at 33,000 feet with a laptop open and headphones on, the next song begins.
Cheza Kidogo will be released on 11 September 2026 via Tahoe Studios across major streaming and digital music platforms.
