Few deep house records have enjoyed the kind of lasting relationship with South African dancefloors that Alexkid’s “Love We Have” has built over the past two decades.
Originally released in 2003, the record by French producer Alexkid found a devoted audience in South Africa, becoming a dancefloor favourite and remaining in the collections of house DJs long after its original release.
Now, 23 years later, the classic is back in rotation — this time with a distinctly South African touch.
Kudbeu and Kana breathe new life into a classic
Stay True Sounds has released Love We Have (Kudbeu & Kana Remix), a new interpretation of Alexkid’s much-loved record by South African producers Kudbeu and Kana.
Kudbeu is the new alias of producer Pierre Johnson, who teams up with longtime collaborator Simeon, working under the name Kana, for the remix.
Rather than dramatically reinventing the record, the pair have taken a more considered approach, retaining the instantly recognisable vocal while creating a warmer, deeper and more spacious production around it.
The result bridges two eras of house music, maintaining the emotional pull of Alexkid’s original while placing it comfortably within South Africa’s contemporary deep house sound.
Already finding its way onto dancefloors
Even before its official release, the remix had begun making its way onto South African dancefloors.
Early DJ support, radio play and growing attention online have helped give “Love We Have” another life, reconnecting the song with longtime house heads while introducing it to a generation that may not have experienced the original during its first run.
That organic response is particularly fitting for a record that has maintained a strong connection with South African house culture for more than two decades.
A new chapter for a South African deep house favourite
The remix arrives at a time when South African producers continue to reinterpret the country’s deep house heritage while pushing the sound forward.
For Kudbeu and Kana, the challenge was not simply to remake a classic, but to preserve what made “Love We Have” memorable in the first place.
Their interpretation allows the familiar vocal and melody to remain at the centre while surrounding them with a production suited to today’s dancefloors.
And with spring underway in South Africa, the timing could hardly be better for an old favourite to find its way back into DJ bags.
