The Amapiano artist talks about his collaboration with Angekebabuye Mc, his hip-hop influences and the forthcoming “Umswenko” in an interview with TheJournalistDJ.com.
South African Amapiano artist Xduppy has unpacked the meaning behind “Lwetse,” his 2026 collaboration with Angekebabuye Mc, describing a song centred on the restless pursuit of money.
Speaking to TheJournalistDJ.com, Xduppy also reflected on celebrating a career milestone, explained the hip-hop influence behind his style and shared a brief update on new music.
The Meaning Behind “Lwetse”
For listeners who have been enjoying “Lwetse” without fully understanding its lyrics, Xduppy offered a straightforward explanation.
“It means I’m sick and I want money,” he said. “I’m sick for money.”
He then summed up the feeling behind the song: “I can’t sleep, I want money.”
It is a simple explanation that gives the track context beyond its dancefloor appeal, connecting its message to the hunger for money and the sleeplessness that can accompany that pursuit.
Celebrating Plaques Without Checking the Numbers
The conversation also touched on a plaque celebration held at a hotel rooftop in Rosebank.
Asked about the achievement and the numbers behind it, Xduppy admitted that keeping track of the figures was not his strength.
“I’m not a number person,” he said.
His response sparked a light-hearted exchange with the host, who joked that the artist was winning without checking the scoreboard. Xduppy played along: “Don’t check the scoreboard, bro.”
While he did not specify the certification level or figures, the occasion marked an opportunity to celebrate his work.
Hip-Hop Roots Behind the Amapiano Artist
The interview also explored the hip-hop influence visible in Xduppy’s style, with the host asking whether there might be a rapper beneath his Amapiano identity.
“We grew up around hip-hop,” Xduppy explained. “So yeah, the influence comes from there.”
Asked whether he would consider pursuing hip-hop, he initially answered “Amapiano” before adding “both,” leaving room for his interest in the two genres.
He also agreed with the host’s observation that Amapiano had changed his life.
New Music on the Horizon With “Umshwenko”
Before wrapping up, Xduppy revealed that he was working on “Umswenko.”
“We’re gonna be dropping ‘Umswenko’ very, very soon,” he said, tentatively suggesting the month following the interview.
Although he did not give a firm release date or explain whether it would be a single or a larger project, the mention offered listeners a glimpse of what he was preparing next.
