Soulful House Sensation Tumelo Ruele Makes Triumphant Return

After a seven-year hiatus from the music scene, acclaimed South African artist Tumelo Ruele is set to make a powerful comeback with his highly anticipated album, Makuki, launching on October 11, 2024.

This nine-track collection promises to be an emotional yet uplifting journey, reflecting themes of love, loss, and the complexities of life.

The album’s title, Makuki, holds profound significance for Tumelo as it honors the memory of his late mother, who passed away in 2021, shortly after the loss of his sister.

These heart-wrenching personal experiences have deeply influenced the emotional landscape of the album.

“I named this album after my mom because it reflects the music I know she would have loved,”

Tumelo explained.

“This is a tribute to her memory, my family’s strength, and all those who supported me during my darkest times. It’s an album of hope, reflection, and celebration.”

Tumelo’s journey back to music began after he took a step back to pursue a Management Advancement Program at the Gordon Institute of Business Science. During his studies, he reassessed his sound and the evolving music landscape.

The COVID-19 pandemic further postponed his return, but it was the personal losses in 2021 that truly reshaped his artistic direction.

“It was a long break, but one that allowed me to rediscover my purpose in music. This album isn’t just a return for me—it’s a new beginning.”

Makuki is his most personal project yet, crafted over five years. The album fuses soulful vocals with modern afro and deep tech beats, showcasing a blend of classic and contemporary influences.

The lead single, “Hope You Don’t Mind,” produced by Botswana’s Favi Charles, sets the tone with its heartfelt message and rich production. Collaborations with prominent producers such as Shivers BW, Njabulo Jiyane, and Gama Mathonsi infuse the album with elements of amapiano, gospel, and soulful house, creating a dynamic and cohesive listening experience.

The opening track, “Makuki’s Prayer,” composed by Gama Mathonsi, features a stirring gospel introduction that encapsulates Tumelo’s spiritual journey, while tracks like “Ngiyazifela” and “Live Your Life” bring vibrant beats designed to resonate with both new and longtime fans.

To celebrate the release, Tumelo will embark on a series of live performances across South Africa, including shows at The Vaal Monateng Café on October 19, The Balcony on October 26, and Meriting on November 2. He will also take his music international, with performances planned in Malaysia and Singapore in December and January.

For Tumelo, Makuki transcends mere music—it is a heartfelt tribute to his family, roots, and the woman who inspired him most. The album’s opening track, “Makuki’s Prayer,” captures one of the last shared prayers with his mother, anchoring the spirituality and faith that permeate the project.

“I believe this is the most well-rounded album I’ve ever written,”

Tumelo reflected.

“It’s about growth, love, and resilience. I hope Makuki reaches the hearts of those who need it most.”

Makuki will be available for streaming and purchase on all major digital music platforms under the record label TRue Music starting October 11, 2024.
