House music veteran returns with fresh focus after years of international touring
South African house music pioneer DJ Chynaman is preparing for a new chapter in his career, revealing that he has completed four brand-new Afro House records as he shifts his focus back to releasing music and expanding his international footprint.
Speaking to TheJournalistDJ.com during DJ Melons’ Afro House event in Durban, the KwaZulu-Natal-born producer reflected on the six years since his last interview, revealing that the period was marked by international performances, business ventures and personal growth.
“I travelled overseas and worked with Themba,” Chynaman explained. “When I came back, I knew I needed to work on myself, work on my album and focus on my songs.”
Building for the international market
Rather than chasing trends, Chynaman says he has spent time studying dance floors around the world to better understand how Afro House continues to evolve internationally.
“I’ve been doing this for the longest time. I go overseas not only to perform but also to understand how people are playing the music because I’m a house DJ,” he said.
His latest body of work consists of four completed Afro House tracks, with plans to release them before the end of July as he positions himself for international festival bookings in 2027.
“Overseas they don’t just call you to play tomorrow. They plan their events during winter for summer, so I’m preparing now.”
Afro House remains rooted in Africa
While international audiences have embraced faster-paced Afro House sounds, Chynaman insists his music remains firmly grounded in African musical traditions.
“The Afro House is different. It’s mostly elements from here in South Africa and Africa. It’s African music,” he said.
The veteran producer believes authenticity remains the key ingredient for taking South African dance music to global audiences.
Durban’s evolving dance music landscape
Although Durban has long been regarded as the birthplace of Gqom, Chynaman says the city’s club scene has become increasingly dominated by both Gqom and Amapiano.
According to the producer, dedicated Afro House events have become increasingly important for preserving the culture and giving house music lovers a space of their own.
“It’s mostly Gqom and Amapiano in the clubs. That’s why we choose to host events dedicated to House and Afro House people.”
Supporting the next generation
Having been part of South Africa’s dance music movement for decades, Chynaman says he appreciates seeing younger artists making their mark rather than viewing them as competition.
“I do get people giving me my flowers, and I’m okay with giving the young boys their chance too. The Amapiano guys are doing well, the Gqom guys are doing well. My style is different, but I like what they’re are doing.”
The sentiment reflects the veteran DJ’s collaborative outlook as South Africa’s electronic music scene continues to diversify.
A new identity for two different audiences
One of the biggest revelations from the interview was Chynaman’s plan to introduce a separate artistic identity for his international releases.
While music aimed at South African audiences will continue to be released under China Man DJ, projects created specifically for the global market will carry a different name—one he is keeping under wraps for now.
“I’m going to have one name for the music I release in South Africa, and another name for music that speaks to the international crowd,” he revealed, teasing an official announcement in the near future.
Looking ahead
After nearly three decades in music, DJ Chynaman is entering what could be one of the most strategic phases of his career. With new Afro House productions completed, international ambitions firmly in place, and a fresh branding strategy on the horizon, the Durban-born pioneer is once again positioning himself to take South African house music to the world stage.
